Yeah as a matter of fact I do...and it was and is a sweet deal for the workers, but laughable business model.

The Big Three automakers are forced to pay 85- to 95-percent of union wages and benefits to members of the United Auto Workers union who aren’t working – even if their plants have been closed.

Industry analysts say union labor agreements that obligate the Big Three to pay millions of dollars to workers who are no longer working are a major reason why the automakers are in trouble – a problem that no short-term bailout can fix.

During hearings last week where the chief executives of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors appeared before the Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) raised the issue.

Corker asked Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors, why with all of the measures he has taken to prevent a collapse, his company was still not making money.

“Is it because of the (United Auto Workers) union?” Corker asked pointedly.

Wagoner, who demurred from answering directly, said that even at plants that are closing, “85 percent” of union employment benefits still “have to be paid.” He said that GM has had to restructure and reduce the cost of operating in the U.S., but the company still pays for employees that are not currently working at “idle facilities.”

Chrysler Chairman Robert Nardelli, facing a similar question from Corker, confirmed that “agreements are in place” between Chrysler and UAW that, regardless of demand, Chrysler must still operate at a pay rate of 95 percent of wages for employees not currently working at idle facilities.

Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland’s school of business, told CNSNews.com that one of the biggest problems the companies face is the UAW’s Jobs Bank – a program established more than two decades ago that guarantees nearly full salary and benefits to out-of-work employees.

“Right now if a plant closes in St. Louis and a new one opens in Kansas City, the workers don’t have to move from St. Louis to Kansas City; they can opt to get a $105,000 payout or go on Jobs Bank where they can collect 95 percent of pay for the rest of their lives,” Morici said.

Fair enough, good debate. The jobs bank is history so talking about it's existence going forward is llike beating a dead horse. The jobs bank did do quite a lot for charities, but again the jobs bank is history. The real reason the jobs bank was agreed upon by the union and big three was to have the auto workers full and whole hearted participation in creating the most efficient, least amount of workers, most productive workforce to build autos. Now that the jobs bank is being eliminated the big three are going to be left with the least amount of employees to manufacture each car ( highest productivity) that the have evr had. Every year less and less employees were needed to build the same amount or more cars in the factories (productivity gains). The employees of the big three whole-heartedly  and eagerly participated in helping the company eliminate their own jobs at the factory (going into the jobs bank) and making the factories ever so much more productive now that the jobs bank is being eliminated and fewer and more productive workers than ever are now left to build the automobiles at the big three. So now the big three reap the benefits of the jobs bank and what it was intended to do because now there will never be another jobs bank and the most productive workforce is in place going forward. Everyone may not agree with the method or madness of the jobs bank, but less and less workers are now building all of the automobiles going forward despite fluctuations in volume and sales going forward. That is why the jobs bank was created, and the jobs bank is gone now.

    That is absurd.

So keep the workers around for peak periods by still paying their wages but not working?

Something tells me if they needed extra capacity, they could hire temp workers or contract it out.

The issue runs deeper, the way these companies operate and manufacture is flawed, their business model is flawed.

Companies that cannot compete and have inefficient operations should not stay in business.

The UAW needs to be shut down and I hope if we do offer assistance from the government that the agreement with the UAW is dissolved and that no union agreement can be made for a span of time.

What needs to happen is the companies need to be gutted from the union to the layers of management, and I just dont see that being plausible..so let them go under.

Why do you keep beating a dead horse? The jobs bank is history. They are downsizing to get the bridge loan from Congress. Autos=34 billion, bankers who caused this at AIG and Citigroup=450 billion at just 2 banks,  because they are obviously doing such a great job at the banks. What about ridding the banks of their vermin. Now that is really absurd, give the thieves and/or idiots at the banks more money with very little conditions. The Republican way is better for all of us.Prevent a run on the banks through the FDIC, and let those idiots and thieves who caused this fail and go to jail. Let the banks who are smaller or bigger and run profitably, be rewarded for their conduct in the markets of capitalism. Typical Republican, doesn't want any government regulation in the banking system until the money is stolen, then they want government intervention on a historic scale. Yes, let's all be Republicans and get rid of all of those darn, no good, collective bargaining labor unions because it is better for all of us. Here we are. The unions are almost all gone in the USA, and it is better for all of us. Republicans, Republicans , Republicans, it is better for all of us.

On a different note, I hope this market (SPY) gets to 95 for my gift of a short position, if I have the patience and the luck. Hopefully these bailouts get the market a little excited and the bear trap set for the little guy to get caught in. I could be wrong, but this is a bear market rally all the way in my opinion. As usual, the media is trying to give the rally lip service on up moves.

Hydrogen cars are the car of the future for sure.

I think the dollar goes up to break new levels here before too long.

    Hat,

Hydro cars are not priced competively enough and the powering source has to be built out..so I dont see that happening.

July, it is not a dead horse, it is yet another sign of inefficiency and there are more where that came from. The UAW is controlling these companies and making them incapable of being profitable and plausible as long term businesses. You just cannot ignore these bad practices and dismiss them because it was caught and exposed, that is what is wrong with these firms.

I dont see much worth salvaging at all, they make a bad product at a bad price. Their plants are inefficient, there are too many layers of management. Businesses like this just dont make it and I dont see why we need to coddle a bad business? These automakers need to either go under or go under a complete overhaul which means management implosion and dissolving the UAW completely, and that is just a start.

Yes, the dollar play, it's working in this deflationary environment, but everyone and their mother knows this stimulus (record budget deficits) will cause inflation from a falling dollar. Seems like oil (USO) is a good play once the dollar gets done with this temporary run up and oils temporary run down. I mean a 40 handle on oil? I didn't think we would ever see oil this low again after last years bubble. Oil does seem too low right now, but it is waiting on the foriegn markets or our market to start to get any kind of good news to rally again. Who in the world will not burn oil at 40,50,60 dollars a barrel? I want a hydrogen converter in a shed on the back of my house too. That would be sweet, and it would seem to get the technology developed faster and into cars on the road faster, or fill my car up at the hydrogen shed on my house.

Wall, we've both made our points, and we agree to disagree. What do you think about the market? Got any good trades you want to pull the trigger on?

I see zippo in the market which has short term value, plenty long term..if you have a horizon there are so many bargains out there it is crazy.

This blip just in, the WSJ quoting that the Fed wont entertain bailout deals for the automakers..

Oil is dropping so much and the stock market and oil have been following each other down. Interesting, no? Now the media is hyping oil to the downside. Hehehe.

I still just see shorting etf's SH, SKF, SDS, ect... nothing on the buy side as well unless like you said willing to wait it out. The easier money right now still seems to be on the short side.

Not to be argumentative but they can't even build a good car (some of it has to do with legacy costs) which they are supposed to do and you want them to survive long enough to build green energy products.  they should have done that 50 years ago not now.

Dodd made the same comment yesterday about the Big 3 making trains and other mass transit products - where are they going to find the money to do that much less the time to develop a product and get it out on to the market before they go bankrupt.

They are car company - they make crappy cars and good SUV/trucks - thats it.  It is like when congressman were upset at the CEO of ExxonMobil asking him why he doesn't devote more resources to alternative energy and he said "because I run an oil company not an alternative energy company"

The big 3 would get their lunch handed to them by GE if they tried to compete in the wind turbine business.

The oil company CEO is not going to build alternative energy on a large scale basis because both businesses directly compete with each other in the marketplace, and all of those fat CEO bonuses are made from fossil fuels. Why would he want to reduce fossil fuel profits and CEO bonuses? I disagree with your assessment of their cars. I drive GM's all the time and do not have any issues with their products. Competition is good for consumers and technology advancement in the long run. Well, you have the brilliant Republican mind of Bush Jr. on your side. He said the Big Three will not survive today. Thank you Republican captain of the Titanic. Run for your lifeboat, run ,run Mr Republican President. We all want to get rid of all of those darn unions, because a Republican told me it is better for all of us. We all want to work for 7 dollars an hour because a Republican told me it is better for all of us, Mr. Republican President, and here we are, it is clearly better for all of us. We want to get rid of all of those darn retirements, because a Republican told me that it would be better for all of us.

I may have missed the bottom, but I will be buying DXO on Monday.  10,000 shares.  Will sell when crude hits $65-70.  I truly think it's a gift.

How does this stock move in correlation to oil futures?  Was trying to calculate it out each day and was having trouble recalculating its correlation.

Unions are simply places for lazy workers that would not survive on their own merits and hardwork otherwise.  The bigger joke is how the union worker thinks his organization protects him.

According to the summary, DXO seeks to track 200% of the Deutsche Bank Liquid Commodity index-Optimum Yield Oil Excess Return.  It is intended to track the performance of crude oil

I do not agree wit this carte blanche. The resources of a corporation need to be counterbalanced. An individual up against a company with billions has little or no chance of protecting him or herself from capricious management decisions (if you have ever been unfairly charged by some asshole  superior who simply did not like you, you know what I mean).
That being said, unions can and are as corrupt as any other organization. The Teamsters are example numero uno in that regard, the UAW not terribly far behind.
