"Don't Believe the Hype" is the second single of Public Enemy's second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The song's lyrics are mostly about the political issues that were current in the U.S. at the time of its release. "Don't Believe the Hype" charted at number 18 on the U.S. R&B chart.

It reached a high of 18 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1988. The b-side included "Prophets of Rage" and "The Rhythm The Rebel" which is an acapella of the opening verse from "Rebel Without a Pause" which was a popular scratching phrase.

"Night of the Living Baseheads" is the third single released by hip hop group Public Enemy, from their critically acclaimed album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The lyrics deal with the effects of crack cocaine on African-Americans during the 1980s crack epidemic, referring to the slang for cocaine "base". The song reached #62 on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.

The song uses more samples than any other song on the album, a total of 20 (including the sample of Chuck D saying "Bass!" at the start of the song "Bring the Noise"). The chorus of the song asks "How low can you go?", refers to a person degrading himself/herself, rather than a dance. The title is a reference to the film Night of the Living Dead, equating people addicted to crack cocaine with zombies.

The group Digital Assassins did a remix of this song entitled "Return of the Living Bassheads (Somethin' Really Bad)"

"Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" is a song by the American hip hop group Public Enemy from their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The song is built on a high-pitched piano sample from the Isaac Hayes song "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymystic" from the album Hot Buttered Soul and tells the story of prison escape.

The vocals are done mostly by lead Public Enemy rapper Chuck D, with sidekick Flavor Flav appearing in between verses, seemingly speaking to Chuck over the phone. Flavor went to another room and did actually call the studio to achieve this effect.

"Rebel Without A Pause" was the first song created for the landmark hip hop album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. The group had recently finished a tour with fellow Def Jam artists LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakim, among others and according to Chuck D. felt that their prior album Yo! Bum Rush The Show was already dated, as production innovations had occurred during the albums' release that he felt made it sound like a timestamp of 1986.^[1] Chuck D and Bomb Squad leader Hank Shocklee wanted to push the innovation in hip hop instead of follow it and decided one key idea to separate themselves from other hip hop acts was to speed the BPM of the beats. Chuck D said in an interview "Most rap records at the time had a BPM of 98 BPM. Our stuff was around 109." ^[2] They had experimented with faster beats at concerts and loved the added energy it gave the crowd so decided they wanted to make a record to capture their live energy.^[3]

Shocklee got the idea to sample a trumpet glissando from The J.B.'s "The Grunt" song. He had a Mirage sampler that was only able to hold 4bits (or 3 seconds) worth of audio to create his demo to give to Chuck to write his rhymes. When they got to a studio and had a superior sampler, the S-900 that held 30 seconds of audio, they felt it took away the impact of the Mirage sample, which forced in a second of delay before the sample reloaded as opposed to the endless loop the studio's sampler gave, and decided to go with it instead.^[4] The Bomb Squad could not find a drum sample they felt was adequate for what they wanted to create, so they instead had Flavor Flav, who was the best drummer of the group, play an original beat on their electronic drum instead. Chuck D wrote the rhymes in less than a day and took 3 takes before he was happy with his performance in the studio.^[5] Originally Public Enemy's longtime musical associate Johnny Juice was going to come in to record the scratching, but Public Enemy's live DJ Terminator X asked if they'd give him a chance to scratch on the song because he had some ideas for it and scratched out the famous "Rock And Roll" sample, which was dubbed "The Transformers Scratch" (taken from the belief that the scratch sounded like the noises the robots on the Transformers cartoon made when they transformed.) ^[6] Shocklee made the final mix with Steve Ett and upon hearing the finished product, Chuck D announced, "I could die tomorrow. Because that record right there? Nothing could fucking go nowhere near it." ^[7]

The song was certified as an instant classic by music critics and fans upon its release.^[8] Shocklee remembers knowing it was going to be a hit when he saw the reaction from the live crowds. "Public Enemy was performing, and they went halfway through the set. And halfway through the set Rebel came on. And I saw kids just running in the (Madison Square) Garden just like kids stealing their chains and shit, alright, because that was the highball, that was like the – the scene was a fight breaking out on the floor. But there wasn’t no fight, that was just the energy." ^[9]

"911 Is a Joke" is a 1990 song by American hip hop group Public Enemy, from their third album, Fear of a Black Planet. It was released as a single and became their first Top 40 hit in June 1990, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.^[1]

The single also reached number 15 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, and number 1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart, becoming their second number-one rap chart hit after "Fight the Power".^[2] The song is about the lack of police response to emergency calls in a black neighborhood;^[3] the "911" in the title of the song refers to 9-1-1, the emergency telephone number used in the United States.^[4]

Among the samples used in "911 Is a Joke" is Vincent Price's laughter from "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. Other samples include "Flash Light" by Parliament, "Misunderstood" by Mico Wave, "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins, "Gottago Gottago!" by Robin Harris, "Devil With the Bust" by Sound Experience, "Feel Like Dancing" by Wilbur "Bad" Bascomb, and "Hit by a Car" and "Singers" by Eddie Murphy. According to law professors Peter DiCola and Kembrew McLeod, if the samples used on "911 Is a Joke" and the other tracks on Fear of a Black Planet had been cleared for copyright under 2010 rates, each copy of the album would have generated a loss of five dollars per album sold, instead of a profit.^[5]

In 1995, English pop rock band Duran Duran covered "911 Is a Joke" on their Thank You album.^[6]

In 2009, The Washington Post ran a story discussing Public Enemy members' visit to a center for homeless and displaced youth.^[7] The article referred to the song "911 is a Joke", but due to a copy-editing error,^[8] "911" was printed as "9/11", which some readers^[9] took to be a reference to the September 11 attacks. A week later, the Post printed a correction.^[4]

Spike Lee produced and directed two music videos for this song. The first featured clips of various scenes from Do the Right Thing. In the second video, Lee used hundreds of extras to simulate a massive political rally in Brooklyn. The extras carry signs featuring Paul Robeson, Marcus Garvey, Chuck Berry and Martin Luther King, Jr. Tawana Brawley made a cameo appearance. Brawley gained national notoriety in 1987 when, at the age of 15, she accused several police officers and public officials from Wappingers Falls, New York of raping her. The charge was rejected in court, and she instead was sued for supposedly fabricating her story. Jermaine Dupri also made a cameo.

"Fight the Power" was voted "Best Single" by the "Pazz & Jop" critics poll of 1989.

Shut 'em Down is the fourth single from Public Enemy's Apocalypse 91...The Enemy Strikes Black.The song gained notoriety when remixed by Pete Rock in the summer of 1992. The remix incorporated elements of a horn sample which interwove prominently in and out of the mix while a filtered ascending bassline served as the backdrop of the song. An audio sample of a 1984 Fresh Fest concert also figures prominently in the mix. Pete Rock explains further: " I did it all in one day. They didn't think I would get it done in one day. The shit was incredible."

Part of Chuck D's voice was sampled on the track "Ten Crack Commandments" by The Notorious B.I.G., off of the album Life After Death.

"Hell No We Ain't All Right!" is a protest song released by hip hop group Public Enemy within weeks of Hurricane Katrina, criticizing President George W. Bush and his administration for his response to the catastrophe, and for wider administration policies. The song specifically links the poor response to the hurricane to the commitment of resources to the war in Iraq, and to the social status of most victims of the disaster. The song was reportedly written by Chuck D on September 2, 2005 and reunited Flavor Flav with Public Enemy for its recording over Labor Day weekend. The premier public performance was on the Morning Sedition radio show, on September 16, 2005.

In addition to Bush and the Bush administration, the song also levels barbs at Pat Robertson (who had recently called for the assassination of Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez), Halliburton, and the characterization of blacks as looters following the catastrophe.

The refrain of the song repeats the line, "New Orleans in the morning, afternoon, and night/Hell No We Ain't All Right".
