He is arguable the best player on your team and without him you are in trouble. Mays and the rest may be good, but they need to show it and without Jones it becomes a very average group overall. If you lose Ingram (and he has not played anywhere near a full season) you are down to no proven backs. Again, I do not care if Richardson is a 5 star back, he has never played against junior and senior defensive players in college. He may be great, but he has to show it on this level. If you lose Ingram(and he is not Coffee by a long shot yet), the running backs will suffer as a group. Finally, the offensive line. This will be the last post I make about it until I do a write-up as it has been beat to death, but the first string is a question mark, let alone the back-ups. You have two, that's two, proven offensive linemen. The others may have talent, but this is not Juco and I could not care less about a 5 star freshman on the offensive line, very few can make the transition out of high school.
Bama backers better pray hard that the five starters produce and stay healthy immediately(and I do not see them producing as a whole) or they have to use guys who as Saban has admitted just are not ready for college ball. As far as the defense, it is as good as advertised and I agree with your remarks on it.
Again, nothing personal and I will not post on this thread again, but some of the things you say as fact are not proven on the field and are really out there. We will see what happens. Nothing personal and I hope you have a great year as a whole...Best of luck...Droxside
Thanks for your post DS. I aprreciate your posts because they are sincere and well though out. I agree we have kind of beat this thing to death and we probably won't see eye-to-eye on everything, but I certainly wouldn't discourage you from posting in the future.
I agree with everything you said about Julio. I understand how you inferred from the statement I made that I was somehow marginalizing Juio's importance to the team, but that's not really what I meant. Because I was not clear, let me try again.
The #1 player Bama cannot afford lose is Greg McElroy. There is a significant drop off past him. Star Jackson has not proven that he's a SEC caliber QB in my opinion. The loss of McElroy would have greatest negative impact for Bama in the VT game.
The #2 player that Alabama can't afford to lose is Julio. He is the best player on the team hands down, and nobody on the roster can replace him. Bama has a lot of talent at the WR position, but clearly nobody can fill his shoes. The biggest problem for Bama, if they were to lose Julio, is that much of the offensive game plan centers around him. Whoever replaces Julio will not be someone who the defense will have to dedicate additional assets to. That changes the dynamics of the game on that side of the ball significantly.
But as right as you are about Julio, you are equally wrong about Ingram and the RBs. First of all Ingram is better than Coffee, and will be a future #1 pick in the NFL draft IMO. The reason Coffee went pro was because he knew he would not get nearly the number of carries he got last year, so he decided to go pro while his stock was at it's apex. It was a very smart move on Coffee's part.
But behind Ingram is Roy Upchurch, then Terry Grant, and then Trent Richardson. Upchurch and Grant are both MORE experienced than Ingram. Upchurch (who is a senior) would have played a much bigger role in last year's offense, but he missed the 2nd half of the season with a neck injury. Terry Grant was the starting RB in Saban's first year. So both of these guys have more career carries than Ingram.
Even if Ingram plays, all the RBs in the 4-deep will get touches in the game (meaning Ingram, Upchurch, Grant & Richardson). So if Ingram doesn't play, you can just remove him from the list and the touches will default to Upchurch, Grant & Richardson. This will have absolutely ZERO effect on this game. The 2 backs that have impressed me the most have been Ingram and Grant. Both have been sensational.
With respect to the O-line, you must understand that I have watched them all spring and summer, and they are a very good unit. They are more accomplished pass blockers at this point, perhaps even better than last year's group. They are definitely not as dominiating in the run game, howeverr, but I don't really think that's even necessary to run the ball effectively.
You must also realize that this line faces a bigger (significantly bigger), stronger and faster front 7 everyday in practice. Bama's front 7 averages 6' 4" and 281 lbs. and runs the 40 in 4.79. VT's front 7 averages 6' 1" and 246 lbs. and runs the 40 in 4.83. In my opinion, with the exception of Worilds, Bama's front 7 is vastly superior to VT's. So I reason that if Bama's line can hold their own against a vastly superior front 7 in practice, I think they'll be just fine against VT's very small front 7.
Will the line make some mistakes in this game? Undoubtaly they will. Will Worilds make some plays? I have absolutely no doubt he will. He may even kill a couple of drives with a sack or two. But will this one man beat Alabama's entire offensive? I think that's very implausible.
And while you're pre-occupying yourself with the perceived weaknesses of Bama's O-line, you don't do the same for the VT O-line (which is where the real mismatches are).
