Dude. You aint alone. Cold turkey quit. Just go away for a weekend. No phone or internet (or bodega). Ya gotta seperate yourself from it totally or it wont work. The longer you dont do it, the easier it will become.

If you're serious about it, find a GA meeting and tell your story. Everyone there is in the same boat, and can get you the help you need. Good luck.

Sounds like it has a hold on your life and you can't escape its grasp. You need to go to meetings but also get an accountant. Set a weekly allowance for yourself. Tell him your story and why. Figure out how much you need each week for food, going out, expenses that DON'T involve gambling. Stay away from the Bodega. That much is obvious. Maybe move like a half hour away or more from there to even avoid the temptation.

My buddy had a very serious problem many years ago and actually took the money he was going to gamble each week and put it in a safe under his bed instead for the entire fall because he was a huge football junkie. It actually worked (although we took the safe and hid it the week before the Super Bowl per his request because he was getting antsy) but he went to meetings and now doesn't gamble anymore. Took awhile though. He made over 300K a year too. Now owns a huge house, married, kids, etc.

Get married and have a kid, or several. I promise you that will take you far away from gambling.

Would be willing to wager that over 50% of people on this site have at least 1 kid.

i dont have any myself but would venture to guess most to tell you the wagering losses make it hurt THAT much more with children than without

You are only 27....you will recover.    

I've heard of folks suggesting 90 meetings in the first 90 days because that really seems to work. After 90 days you are far enough away from the fish bowl to wake up and say, what the F have I been doing to myself and why did I ever do it.

At that point it is strongly suggested to go to 1-2 meeting a week but hell, that's only 1-2 hours a week worth of medicine. If the meetings seem to ramble over an hour, just leave early that night.

I think prolly 30-40% of the folks on this board are compulsive gamblers whereas probably 10% of the general public is. Although I think probably 50% of the population has that same addictive personality. The problem is, cigarettes, beer or ice cream won't break you down like gambling will. I think it's the most wrecking financially of  all the addictions and one of the hardest to quit.

The recidivism/relapse rate for compulsive gamblers is probably as high as it is for Heroin addicts.

I'd find a meeting, a higher power and a sponsor. You're not going to solve all your problems at once but one day at a time your life will get better. I'm doing some sole searching right now myself actually. I'm missing a lot of time with my son and away (mentally) from my business with this obsession to figure what I'm going to gamble on next.  I've come very close in the last few weeks into having bookmaker shut down my account in fact. I did it once at Pinnacle years ago. Two years later I tried to open it back up and they said, sorry, but we take that problem you mentioned very seriously and won't reopen it. Anyway, lots of opinions there including those percentages I through out. GL man, hopefully those of us who need to quit find that grace from up above. Only a few lucky ones ever get that grace.

in order to quit anything you have to want to quit and it doesn' sound like you are ready. If you have 12k your roll should only be 3-4k the other 8 belong to life....You need lifes money and a gambling roll and they are two separate things. I'm not going to get long winded...quit betting so damn much if that is all the scratch you have...with 12k only 3-4 should be for gambling.. Best Wishes

You are 27 years old and I am 50 years old so I suggest you listen to what I have to say because my story is true and trust me you don't want to end up like me.

I paid back the money I took and had over 100k in cash I was free and clear.... but not for long.

The addiction is so bad that I literally can't stand a second that I'm not gambling. I am now facing some major problems in my life and really feel that the only way I can stop gambling is to jump.... its that bad.

Shut up and go away. This isn't GA.  

I'm 33 and started pretty young also. You know what makes me happy? Seeing 6-7 figures in my 401k. You have to change your priorities in life and find what makes YOU HAPPY. Gambling is definitely a serious addiction - and it doesn't mean you have to stop - it just means you need to MANAGE IT.

This screen name is probably 13 years old, I can't believe I even remembered the password. I saw this post and it brought back so many horrible memories, so I'm gonna give my wonderful 2 cents. Im 31, started gambling at 18. I started gambling to make a shit load of money, "easy money" I thought. I spent from 18-25 pretty much broke. I quit gambling period from 25-29. I took all my energy and put it into my career. Grew my skills, and now make good money. 150-350 depending on the year. Had I not totally quit during that time, I would still be the same broke 18 year old kid. I'm married, have a kid, I still gamble a little. 2-300 a game. 500 a game if I got that "feeling". If I go up 700, I stop. If I go down 700, I stop. Thats my deal. I let the cool kid making a living gambling BS completely leave my head. Taking those 4 years off was the best thing I could have ever done. I didn't respect gambling when I was 18-25. Get other hobbies. I started riding dirt bikes again at 26. It's great . Try to replace the rush with something else. 2 months ago I landed a deal in my profession that made me 75g in 2 weeks. That's a healthy rush . You've opened up shit in your brain man. Your like an adrenaline Junkie. You gotta get that fix in other ways man. Good luck buddy. Turn that energy towards something else.
