Stampeders vs Roughriders predictions
Saskatchewan -3.5 (-110)
The Stampeders walked away with a much-needed 23-17 win when these teams met up last Saturday. Calgary's defense frustrated Riders QB Cody Fajardo, limiting him to a completion percentage of 56.8 and intercepting him on Saskatchewan's final drive of the game.
The Stamps moved to 3-5 SU this year, while the Riders are 5-3 with two of their losses coming against the Grey Cup favorite Blue Bombers.
Although Fajardo's accuracy was off and his annoyance at Saskatchewan's dink-and-dunk offense is fair, he's still a proven commodity who can make plays with his arm and feet. Expect a bounce-back game from Fajardo against a Calgary defense that ranks second-last in the league with 279.6 passing yards per game allowed and last in sacks per game (1.75).
Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was efficient last week but he hasn't played anywhere near as well as he has in the past, throwing for four touchdowns with eight interceptions in five starts this year.
He'll be facing off against a tough Saskatchewan stop unit that ranks third in the league in both total defense (326.9 yards per game allowed) and scoring defense (20.8 points per game allowed).
The Riders are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a loss while the Stamps are 1-6-1 ATS in their previous eight contests after a SU win. Count on an improved performance from Saskatchewan this time around and back them on the spread.
Over 43.5 (-110)
It was a defensive battle last weekend with Calgary forcing Saskatchewan into nine punts and the Riders limiting the Stamps to just 268 yards of offense. That said, the Over/Under opened at 48 for Week 9 and oddsmakers might be overreacting by setting this total at 43.5.
We mentioned Mitchell's struggles this season but the former two-time Most Outstanding Player is getting closer to 100 percent and is starting to build chemistry with his new WR corps.
The Riders need a deep threat with All-Star wideout Shaq Evans still recovering from a broken foot, but their short-to-intermediate passing game as well as their ground attack, led by William Powell, are strong.
In Week 9, Fajardo was off on a few throws he usually makes but Saskatchewan still had a respectable 358 yards and made four trips inside the red zone. Expect them to execute better at home against a Stampeders defense that has looked vulnerable this year.
