Stampeders vs Lions predictions
Calgary ML (-103)
Those who questioned the Stampeders after their 1-4 start to the year might be re-evaluating after the Stamps won three of their last four games despite coming in as underdogs. Those wins haven't been pretty but it takes a certain mentality to grind out close victories even if it might look ugly to fans.
Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was banged up at the start of the season but now looks healthy and is building rapport with his receivers. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player completed 20 of 28 passes for 296 yards in a road victory against the Roughriders last week and will look to continue that success versus BC.
The Lions are coming off a bye and before that had dropped back-to-back home contests against the Riders and Blue Bombers. They have a star QB of their own in Michael Reilly who leads the CFL in completion rate (73 percent) and QB efficiency (113.6).
That said, he'll be missing one of his favorite targets in Lucky Whitehead, and BC's struggling ground game hasn't been able to take pressure off the aerial attack.
It's fair to question just how good the Lions are when you consider that two of their four victories came against the lowly Redblacks. Of course, their first victory came against the Stamps in Week 2 when they pulled off the 15-9 upset but Mitchell played with a broken fibula in that contest and threw a highly uncharacteristic four interceptions.
Look for a better performance from Mitchell in this one and take Calgary on the moneyline.
Under 44.5 (-110)
The Lions defense is surrendering a league-worst 389 yards per game but their "bend, don't break" philosophy has resulted in 16 takeaways and a stingy 20.9 ppg allowed.
While the Lions have an explosive passing game, their offense lacks balance due to a toothless rushing attack that ranks last in the league with 60.3 rushing yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry.
The Stampeders had some uneven play on the defensive side of the ball to begin the year but they've turned things around lately, allowing just 297 yards and 18.8 points per game over their last four contests.
With the Under going 14-4 in the Lions' last 18 games overall, and also cashing in seven of the previous eight meetings between these squads, back it again on Saturday.
