My Argentina vs Spain prop picks

France/Spain Either team to win in regulation time No

Kalshi probability: 34%

Sunday’s World Cup Final is meant to be a display of the beautiful game, but so often these finals can be tense, tight, and often are played in a more cautious manner than the games we’ve seen before them. It’s no surprise that when you look back over recent finals, four of the past five, dating back to 2006, have finished level after 90 minutes.

Even Qatar’s excellent Argentina-France final required extra time and penalties.

Looking at these teams, a draw feels like a possibility, and one which is more likely than the 34% probability would suggest. Spain might have reached the final, but this feels like a team that has only really played one excellent game, and that came against the French in the semis.

Up until this point, they’ve been hugely disappointing. A draw with Cape Verde showed that they can sometimes be impotent in attack, relying on ball possession too much.

It’s also worth remembering that two of their four knockout games featured winning goals after the 88th minute. Otherwise, those games would have finished level in regulation.

Meanwhile, the Argentines have had two of their four knockout games require extra time, while winners scored in added time against Egypt and England are the reason they’re here. Argentina are at their best when teams sit back deep against them, allowing the likes of Lionel Messi to dictate play high up the pitch.

England saw that in the semifinals, and Spain, with their excellent press and ability to control the ball, simply won’t allow that to happen. This could be a long, uneventful 90 minutes.

 TOP PICK

Spain Lamine Yamal assist

Kalshi probability: 25%

Coming into this tournament, many thought Lamine Yamal could really arrive and announce himself as the best player in the world, but it’s not really worked like that. He’s no doubt still not 100% following the injury he sustained prior to the tournament, but he’s still been very good for Spain.

He’s only scored once and is yet to register an assist, but that could change on Sunday.

Domestically, he’s nearly as dangerous as a provider of goals as he is a finisher, as evidenced by 11 La Liga assists to 16 goals.

This is a game set up for him to flourish. Argentina play a narrow midfield diamond, and have a weakness at fullback.

It’s said that the coaching staff was shocked that England, with their wide talent, didn’t get at them more, but Spain cannot make that mistake.

Yamal is likely to be up against 33-year-old Nicolas Tagliafico, who should start at left back. He’s had a solid career but he lacks electric pace. Up against the speed and trickery of Yamal, he could have a very difficult game, especially if his midfield diamond doesn’t allow the left-sided player to give him enough cover.

If Yamal can isolate him in 1-on-1s as he attacks the box, he has a great chance of goals or sliding through balls for others, such as Mikel Oyarzabal.

France/Spain “Golden Boot” to be called by announcer

Kalshi probability: 53%

With a probability of 53%, this isn’t far off a coin toss for something that should almost certainly happen. The Golden Boot contest is still going, and with Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham all available to play in the third-place playoff on Saturday, it will still be active when this game kicks off.

Before that game, Lionel Messi was still tied with Mbappe on eight goals, and just ahead of Kane and Bellingham.

The 39-year-old still has a chance to get ahead of his opposition and seal that award, and given how often it’s been mentioned on the FOX broadcasts throughout the tournament, it seems hugely unlikely that the race for the Golden Boot won’t come up again.

Whether Messi scores or not, he’s going to get into dangerous positions that would make discussion of his Golden Boot credentials worthwhile. He’s had 33 shots so far at this tournament, over three times that of any of his teammates, with over half registering on target.

His legacy is already secured, but the announcers won’t be able to stop mentioning the possibility of yet another accolade to his considerable collection.
