Expert Premier League moneyline picks for Matchweek 3
Ipswich Town vs Liverpool pick: Liverpool
Liverpool are winless through two matches, but I’m not overreacting to a pair of draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. The Reds have still shown plenty going forward, and this is a much softer matchup. Ipswich conceded five at Manchester United last weekend, and Liverpool have the attacking quality to create similar problems. The defensive issues keep this from being a complete layup, but I trust Liverpool’s talent advantage to eventually take over.
Newcastle vs Bournemouth pick: Newcastle
Newcastle followed a draw with Liverpool by beating Tottenham 2-0 on the road, and I like them to keep that momentum going at St James’ Park. Bournemouth have been competitive without winning, taking just one point from their first two matches. The Cherries can make this uncomfortable, especially in transition, but Newcastle should control more territory and generate the better chances.
Brentford vs Sunderland pick: Brentford
Brentford have looked sharp through two matches, opening with a convincing win over Tottenham before earning a point at Leeds. Sunderland bounced back from their opening loss by beating Fulham, but they created very little before finding a late winner. This matchup should favor Brentford’s physicality, pressing, and ability to create from second balls and set pieces. At home, I expect the Bees to dictate the game and eventually break down a Sunderland side still finding its footing.
Brighton vs Leeds United pick: Brighton
Brighton have been one of the Premier League’s most entertaining teams through two matches, scoring seven goals while conceding seven. That volatility makes them difficult to trust at a short price, but their attacking ceiling is considerably higher than Leeds’. The visitors have started well and should be capable of threatening in transition, especially given Brighton’s defensive issues. Still, at home, I expect the Seagulls to create enough chances to outscore Leeds and collect their second victory.
Fulham vs Crystal Palace pick: Draw
Neither side has given me enough reason to trust it outright. Fulham are 0-2 and failed to register a shot on target in their loss to Sunderland, while Crystal Palace have also lost twice and already conceded six goals. Fulham should control more possession at Craven Cottage, but Palace remain dangerous enough in transition to punish them. With one team struggling to create and the other struggling to defend, I’m splitting the difference and taking the draw.
Manchester City vs Coventry City pick: Manchester City
There isn’t much mystery here. Manchester City have opened with consecutive wins and six goals, while Coventry have lost both matches without scoring. City have an overwhelming advantage in talent, depth, and chance creation, and even significant rotation shouldn’t change the matchup. City are easily the most likely winner on the board and should handle Coventry comfortably at home.
Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham pick: Nottingham
Tottenham have opened the season with consecutive losses without scoring, and I’m not ready to assume a turnaround simply because their roster looks stronger on paper. Nottingham Forest showed plenty of attacking threat in a 2-2 draw at Liverpool, twice taking the lead and repeatedly creating problems in transition. That style should translate well against a Spurs team still adapting to Roberto De Zerbi. At the City Ground, I’ll take Forest to capitalize on Tottenham’s early-season instability.
Hull City vs Aston Villa pick: Draw
Aston Villa are clearly the more talented side, but they’ve opened the season with two losses and still haven’t scored or had a shot on target. Their performance against Arsenal was improved, yet I’m not eager to lay road juice with a heavily rebuilt team that’s still finding chemistry. Hull, meanwhile, are 2-0 with two clean sheets after beating Manchester United and Coventry. Villa remain the likelier individual winner, but at the expected price, I prefer the draw in a competitive matchup.
Everton vs Manchester United pick: Manchester United
Manchester United responded to their opening loss at Hull by putting five past Ipswich, with Bruno Fernandes leading a much sharper attacking performance. Everton have been solid through two matches, but their attacking depth took another hit at the transfer deadline, leaving fewer reliable options if they fall behind. I don’t expect another United rout, especially away from home, but Michael Carrick’s side has more game-changing quality. I’ll back United to edge a tight one at Everton.
Arsenal vs Chelsea pick: Chelsea
Arsenal have opened with consecutive clean sheets, but Chelsea represent a significant step up in attacking quality after scoring seven goals through two matches. The Blues have been vulnerable defensively, yet their ability to create and finish chances gives them a legitimate path to an upset at the Emirates. Arsenal weren't untouchable against Aston Villa on Monday, and with Chelsea entering this derby in excellent attacking form, I'll take the bigger price on the visitors.
