The Washington Mystics will look to build on their first win of the season when they host the Chicago Sky tonight.

The Mystics (1-12) are coming off an emphatic 87-68 win over the Atlanta Dream, but remain a slight home underdog against the Sky (4-7) according to the WNBA odds.

Washington will have to once again play without the hobbled Brittney Sykes, and my Sky vs. Mystics predictions detail how that impacts our WNBA picks for Friday, June 14.

Sky vs Mystics predictions

My best bet
Sky -2.5 (-112 at DraftKings)

My analysis

The Washington Mystics never looked quite as bad as their record suggested, and they proved that by getting their first win with ease on Tuesday night. Washington led wire to wire, and the Mystics shot 17-for-31 from 3-point range in a barrage that Atlanta just couldn’t handle.

One of the big factors in that win was the return of guard Brittney Sykes. The 30-year-old had missed 10 games with a left ankle injury, but immediately made an impact in her return, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while also dishing out four assists and grabbing three rebounds. She’s also a force on defense, having made the All-Defensive Team in each of the last four seasons.

However, Sykes’ impact didn’t last long. She was only able to play for 14 minutes — yes, her scoring burst happened that quickly — before she suffered a new left foot injury that took her out of the game. Sykes will now sit out on Friday and could miss more time.

In the short term, this spells trouble for the Mystics. They failed to win a game with Sykes, who not only contributes on both ends of the court but also provides veteran leadership for a relatively young team. Whether or not Washington can win without Sykes is still an open question, and tonight, the Mystics will have a tall task facing the Chicago Sky.

Although Chicago has dropped four of its last five games, the sole win was a 79-71 road triumph over the Mystics last week. That game saw rookie Angel Reese score 16 points and grab 11 rebounds, part of a recent streak of four straight double-doubles for the former LSU standout. The Sky also got 25 points off the bench from Chennedy Carter, who has now reached double figures in nine of her last 10 games.

Weapons like that will be difficult for Washington to keep up with, as the Mystics possess a league-worst offensive rating of 93.8. The Sky play enough defense to prevent Washington from breaking out tonight, and without Sykes on the court, the Mystics are going to have a tough time putting together a two-game winning streak.

Take the Sky to cover on the road.

Sky vs Mystics same-game parlay (SGP)

Sky -2.5

Under 159.5

Angel Reese 10+ rebounds

My SGP also includes a bet on the Under, as these teams have a history of going below the number when they face off. They’re also both among the weakest offensive teams in the WNBA this season.

I’ll round out this parlay with a bet on Chicago rookie Angel Reese to grab at least 10 rebounds tonight. Reese has gone into double figures in rebounds in each of her last five games and should be able to continue that success on the boards against a vulnerable Mystics interior.

Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
