The Atlanta Dream open their first-round playoff series as 6.5-point favorites as they welcome the Washington Mystics intot State Farm Arena tonight.
Atlanta's defense has disrupted offenses all season long, and I'm taking it to cover in my Mystics vs. Dream prediction for Game 1 when things get underway at 7 p.m. ET on Prime Video. Read on to see all of my free WNBA picks for Sunday, Sept. 27.

Mystics vs Dream prediction: Dream -6.5
The Atlanta Dream come into the playoffs having won nine of their last 10 games. The Dream finished the regular season ranking third in point differential (+6.9), have the league's best defensive rebounding rate (79.9%), and rank third in defensive rating (103.5).
The Washington Mystics are one of the few teams that can compete with Atlanta on the boards, but Washington's inefficient offense — ranked 12th in offensive rating this season — leaves it at a significant disadvantage against an active Dream defense.
I'm backing the Dream to cover at home and would play this up to 7.5.
COVERS INTEL: The Dream lead the WNBA with a 10.2% steal rate, which will frustrate a Washington offense that commits a league-high 15.5 turnovers per game.

These teams both ranked in the Top 4 in scoring defense in the regular season, as well as finishing in the Top 3 in defensive rating for the year.
The Mystics didn't match that with great offensive production, however, averaging just 84.0 ppg, while the Dream shot only 44.2% from the field, struggling against some of the league's best defenses despite putting up strong overall scoring numbers. I like the Under in Game 1.
Still, it's hard to imagine Allisha Gray not showing up tonight. Gray averaged 19.0 ppg during the regular season and was a consistent threat to go for 20+, putting up 24 points in Atlanta's regular season finale. Gray put up 26 points in her last meeting with Washington, and I like her to hit her to reach 20 again tonight.
