Fight analysis
Jared Cannonier is the No. 5-ranked middleweight contender and has fought against the cream of the crop in this division. He's lost decisions to Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker while beating other Top-5 middleweights like Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori.
However, Cannonier is now 40 years old and looked slow in his last fight, losing by TKO in the fourth round against Nassourdine Imavov in June. The stoppage looked a bit early but Cannonier was on skates and was eating heavy shots without firing back. He absorbed plenty of damage in that fight and he's entering the octagon just 11 weeks later against an extremely dangerous foe in Borralho.
Borralho is even faster than Imavov and while he isn't quite as technical with his striking, he has more power and far better grappling. The Natural is on a 15-fight winning streak and has gone 6-0 in the UFC. He's fresh off a knockout win against Paul Craig, which was his second Performance of the Night bonus in his last three fights.
He's well-rounded with good in-and-out striking, excellent grappling ability, and a high fight IQ. That's more than enough for me to back him against a declining fighter in Cannonier.
Best best analysis
Cannonier has heavy hands and powerful kicks but he tends to be methodical in his approach and isn't one to rush things. Five of his last seven bouts have gone the distance (including four that went 25 minutes) and with his patience and Borralho's feints, there will be a feeling-out process in the first few rounds.
Four of Borralho's six wins in the UFC have come via points. His knockout came against Craig — who has poor defensive striking and a weak chin — while his submission victory came against Michał Oleksiejczuk, who is terrible on the mat. Cannonier has displayed strong takedown defense and durability since moving to middleweight so it'll be far tougher to submit or knock him out.
Borralho is a cautious striker which we saw against Craig when he took his time before picking his shots despite all the holes in Craig's kickboxing. He'll be wary of Cannonier's power and will likely stay on the outside with his striking or try to grapple in close. Either way, this bout should go the distance.
