Last Meeting ( Feb 9, 2025 ) Kansas City 22, Philadelphia 40
The Kansas City Chiefs will look to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2014 when they host the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl LIX rematch on Sunday.
This version of the Andy Reid Bowl comes seven months after the Eagles scored the first 34 points in a lopsided 40-22 victory in New Orleans, ending the Chiefs' bid for an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat.
"We'll learn from this," Reid, the winningest coach in the history of both the Chiefs and Eagles, vowed after that game.
Both teams enter Sunday's rematch rested. Philadelphia (1-0) kicked off its title defense last Thursday with a 24-20 home win against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys, while Kansas City (0-1) fell 27-21 last Friday in Sao Paulo to the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers.
The last time the Chiefs opened a season with two straight losses, in 2014, was also the last time Kansas City failed to make the playoffs.
The game features the active NFL head coaches with the highest winning percentage in Philadelphia's Nick Sirianni (.710, 49-20) and the most wins (Reid, 273). It's also a clash of Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks with the highest winning percentages in the league since 2022: Jalen Hurts (.792, 38-10) and Patrick Mahomes (.780, 39-11).
"It's just another opportunity for us," Hurts said Wednesday when asked about facing Mahomes and the Chiefs again. "That's been my approach on it. We've got a lot that we can learn from this past week and we're playing a really good team. It's a new team. We're a new team.
"... It's a different team. They have their leaders and they've always had their core, and they've always been really renowned for being disruptive, being able to score the ball and just playing really good team football. It's a real well-respected organization."
Mahomes, who has three Super Bowl rings, said he always learns from his mistakes, whether it's from the Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia or last week's effort in Brazil.
"That's part of playing the game," Mahomes said Wednesday. "You learn from your failures, just like you learn from the positive things you do, and then you come back and play better football this week, and it's going to take our best football to go out there and get a win."
This is the fifth straight season (including playoffs) that Philadelphia has played Kansas City. Including a split in their two recent Super Bowl meetings, the all-time series between the Chiefs and Eagles is tied at 6-6.
Only Kansas City (.714, 25-10) has a better road winning percentage than Philadelphia (24-10, .706) in the NFL since 2021. And only the Chiefs have a better interconference record (17-3) during that same span than the Eagles (16-4). Philadelphia has won nine straight regular-season and postseason games against AFC opponents.
Philadelphia tight end Dallas Goedert has a knee sprain and was ruled out for Week 2. Backup running back Will Shipley (oblique) and reserve tackle Cameron Williams (shoulder) also won't play. Backup QB Tanner McKee (thumb) is questionable, but starting left guard Landon Dickerson (back) returned to practice and was cleared to play.
For the Chiefs, wide receiver Xavier Worthy was listed as doubtful with Reid giving him a "slim" chance to be active. Worthy dislocated his right shoulder when teammate Travis Kelce collided with him early in the Chargers game, but the 2024 first-round pick returned to practice on a limited basis.
Fellow receiver Jalen Royals (knee) was the only Chief ruled out. Right guard Trey Smith (knee/illness), right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee/ankle), linebackers Drue Tranquill (knee) and Nick Bolton (biceps) and wideout Marquise "Hollywood" Brown (ankle) were all cleared to play.
