Temple @ Penn State preview
Beaver Stadium
Last Meeting ( Sep 17, 2011 ) Penn State 14, Temple 10
Penn State has certainly enjoyed the better of its Keystone State rivalry with Temple, having won 30 consecutive decisions dating back to 1941. The Owls are intent on bringing that streak to an end on Saturday when they invade Beaver Stadium to face the Nittany Lions. To do so, they'll need to contain the prolific combination of quarterback Matt McGlin and wide receiver Allen Robinson. The 6-foot-3 sophomore wideout has reeled in 24 receptions for 322 yards. While Penn State rolled to a 34-7 triumph over Navy last week, Temple had two weeks to lick its wounds following a 36-27 setback to Maryland. Coach Steve Addazio's club put a scare into Penn State last season before letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away in a 14-10 setback at Lincoln Financial Field.
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN2. LINE: Penn State -8.
ABOUT TEMPLE (1-1): Struggling quarterback Chris Coyer uses his considerable 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame to aid in the Owls' rushing attack. Coyer has bulldozed his way to 153 yards in two games this season. As for his arm, that's a different matter as the junior has only completed 12 of 29 passes for 239 yards. Wide receiver Jalen Fitzpatrick leads the club with four catches, 97 yards and a touchdown. Running back Matt Brown was slowed last week by a sprained ankle, but expects to be ready Saturday.
ABOUT PENN STATE (1-2): While the Nittany Lions' offense often generates headlines - for better or worse - their defense has forced four turnovers in each of the last two contests. First-year head coach Bill O'Brien will likely have his charges try to subdue Brown and make Coyer defeat them with his arm. As for Penn State's rushing attack, it will likely see the return of Bill Benton after he missed last week's game with an ankle injury.
EXTRA POINTS
1. Members of Penn State's 1982 national championship team will be honored during Saturday's game. That team was the first in school history to win a national title.
2. Temple RB Montel Harris suffered a hamstring injury against Maryland and is questionable Saturday.
3. Penn State has been been sizzling coming out of the blocks, outscoring its foes 41-6 in the first half.
PREDICTION: Penn State 21, Temple 13.
