PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Juan Nicasio (4-3, 4.24 ERA) vs. Padres LH Wade LeBlanc (0-2, 5.17 ERA)
Nicasio allowed five earned runs on two walks and six hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Dodgers last Monday. He is 4-0 with a 1.58 ERA in six starts at Coors Field but 0-3 with an 8.75 ERA in five road starts. LeBlanc is making a spot start in place of Dustin Moseley (shoulder) after going 9-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 17 starts for Triple-A Reno. He gave up six runs over five innings against Las Vegas last Thursday. He is making his fourth start for the Padres this season.
ABOUT THE ROCKIES (51-56): After a bit of drama Saturday, Jimenez was traded to the Indians for pitching prospects Drew Pomeranz, Joe Gardner and Alex White, plus first base prospect Matt McBride. Jimenez gave up four runs in the first inning before he was pulled from the game and informed of the trade. The key to the deal for the Rockies was Pomeranz, a 2010 first-round pick and the Indians' top prospect. He had a 1.87 ERA over 77 innings for High-A Kingston before he was promoted to Double-A Akron, where he had a 2.57 ERA over three starts. White, who was selected 15th overall in 2009, had a 3.60 ERA over three starts spanning 15 innings in the majors before landing on the disabled list with a middle-finger sprain. He was scheduled to make a rehab start Saturday before he was scratched because of the trade. Esmil Rogers, who took over for Jimenez in the second inning Saturday and pitched five strong innings, will likely take over Jimenez’s spot in the rotation.
ABOUT THE PADRES (46-62): Shortstop Jason Bartlett (hamstring) and right fielder Will Venable (back spasms) missed their second straight game on Saturday. Both players are expected to avoid the disabled list, and Bartlett could return to the lineup on Sunday. Catcher Nick Hundley, who had elbow surgery on July 8, appears ready to begin a rehab assignment next week. Reliever Luke Gregerson inherited three runners in scoring position in two games last week and allowed none to score, but he struggled on Saturday when he gave up three runs on four hits and one walk in one inning. The Indians are reportedly close to acquiring outfielder Ryan Ludwick, who is batting .238. Kyle Blanks will likely move to left field when Ludwick is traded, while Jesus Guzman could become the starter at first base. Guzman is batting .325 after going 2-for-3 on Saturday.
FINAL PITCH: Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (wrist) said Saturday there’s a chance he could be ready to be activated from the disabled list when he’s eligible on Aug. 6.
