Minnesota @ Milwaukee preview
American Family Field
Last Meeting ( Jun 24, 2011 ) Minnesota 3, Milwaukee 4
THE STORY: The Milwaukee Brewers keep producing dramatic wins at home, and they'll look to build on the latest - Friday's 4-3 comeback victory - when they continue their three-game interleague series with the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night. The Brewers have won the past five meetings between the border rivals.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports North (Minnesota), Fox Sports Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Francisco Liriano (4-6, 4.59 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Yovani Gallardo (8-4, 4.11). Liriano has been outstanding since coming off the disabled list June 7. In three starts since, he is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA with 24 strikeouts and five walks in 20 innings during that span. The only loss was 1-0 to Cleveland in his first game back. Liriano is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts against the Brewers, but Milwaukee beat him in the only meeting last year. Gallardo endured one of his worst outings of the year Sunday at Boston, giving up eight runs (five earned) in three innings. He allowed two home runs and lost his second straight decision since winning six consecutive starts from May 7-June 4. In two starts against the Twins, Gallardo is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA, and threw a five-hit shutout against them last June 24 at Miller Park.
ABOUT THE TWINS (32-42): Minnesota has lost three straight since having their season-long eight-game winning streak snapped. It seemed they would turn that momentum back around when Danny Valencia's three-run homer gave them a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning Friday, but reliever Jose Mijares gave up a two-run double to Prince Fielder in the seventh. The Twins got more bad news Friday when the learned first baseman Justin Morneau will need surgery to remove a herniated disk fragment from his neck and will miss six weeks.
ABOUT THE BREWERS (42-35): Milwaukee is a National League-best 27-11 at home, where it has lost only three of 12 series this season. The biggest reason for the Brewers' success at Miller Park has been their offense - they hit .279 at home compared to .231 on the road. Their top sluggers chipped in Friday. Fielder's two-run double ran his NL-leading RBI total to 65, and Ryan Braun extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an RBI double.
FINAL PITCH: Milwaukee is the only team in the majors that has not lost consecutive home games this season.
