San Diego @ Atlanta preview
Turner Field
Last Meeting ( Jun 8, 2015 ) San Diego 5, Atlanta 3
As the San Diego Padres visit the Atlanta Braves for the second contest of their four-game series on Tuesday, an afterthought in the second of two major offseason deals between the teams continues asserting himself. Atlanta's Cameron Maybin, acquired on the eve of the season opener from the Padres in the blockbuster involving Craig Kimbrel, recorded his fifth consecutive multi-hit performance in Monday’s series opener.
Maybin is batting .408 in his last 11 games and hitting .299 on the season for the Braves, who blew a ninth-inning lead Monday to lose 5-3 in 11 frames. San Diego won for the first time in 27 games when trailing after eight innings, and Kimbrel notched his 14th save – and the 200th of his career. Matt Kemp’s go-ahead double in the 11th extended his hitting streak to five games and gave him six RBIs in the last four contests. Yonder Alonso collected a pair of hits and has 15 hits in 12 career games against Atlanta.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH James Shields (7-0, 3.58 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (3-2, 4.29)
Shields has allowed a National League-high 15 homers, but otherwise the 33-year-old has been stellar in his debut NL season. The 10-year veteran moved three victories away from reaching double figures for the ninth consecutive year by beating the New York Mets on Wednesday, when he allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Shields ranks second in the NL in strikeouts, fanning seven or more nine times in his first 12 starts.
Foltynewicz will be making his eighth start since being promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett and joining Atlanta’s rotation on May 1. He gave up five runs (four earned) and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings on June 3 against Arizona, fanning five while not factoring in the decision. Foltynewicz, who struck out 36 over his previous five starts, is 1-2 since beginning his season with back-to-back victories.
