Side analysis
This game looks very different now than it did midweek and West Ham vs. Burnley is now the most fascinating game on Sunday’s small slate. These two teams are in very different stages with West Ham pushing for a European spot, while Burnley are trying their best to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
To really understand what’s going to happen in this game, you need to have a look at the events that have unfolded for both teams since Thursday. West Ham pulled off a historic victory on the road in Lyon that has taken them to the Europa League semi-finals. It really is an amazing achievement for the club and manager David Moyes.
That success does raise questions for this fixture though. Are the players going to be overawed and not focusing on the remaining Premier League campaign? There’s also the question of how much that game has taken out of the players physically and emotionally, and if that will impact them.
There are just as many doubts over Burnley, who sensationally sacked Sean Dyche as manager on Friday in a move that feels incredibly stupid, let alone disrespectful. That move left social media ablaze with shock and rage and you can only imagine what it’s doing to the players.
Michael Jackson has taken over as the caretaker manager and the club will be hoping for the famous ‘new manager bounce’ which might lead them to safety. Burnley are four points adrift from Everton and with eight games left, they’ll need to pull off something special to survive.
The new manager bounce is something that we’ve seen work for clubs before, but this group of players are poor and Sean Dyche was doing as good of a job as anybody would. Jackson will probably continue to set Burnley up in 4-4-2 given that it’s a system they’re familiar with and have used for a long time.
We know that Johann Gudmundsson, Erik Pieters, and Ben Mee are missing through injury but beyond that, we’re unsure exactly who’ll be playing, although there is an expectation that Jackson will keep the majority of the same starters in the lineup.
West Ham should set up in their usual 4-2-3-1 and there are questions about whether Moyes will rest any of his stars such as Declan Rice. There isn’t really a great deal of depth in the squad so we probably won’t see much rotation, but Said Benrahma and Nikla Vlasic are two who could benefit from others being rested.
Despite the managerial change, it’s hard to see anything but a win for West Ham. Burnley have garnered just nine points on the road this season and in each of their past six games, they’ve conceded a minimum of two goals.
In those six Premier League matches, they’ve failed to score in five of them and lost the same amount too. Back West Ham as they really should win here.
Prediction: West Ham (-138 at bet365)
Over/Under analysis
Being four points adrift with eight games left will have West Ham try and play more expansively to get into goalscoring situations.
That’ll mean more chance of goals for the likes of Wout Weghorst but it’ll also open up spaces for West Ham to exploit, something I expect them to be able to do.
There have been Over 2.5 goals in 62.5% of West Ham’s games at the London Stadium and they should be able to take advantage of a Burnley’s desperation to ensure a high scoring match here.
Prediction: Over 2.5 (+100 at bet365)
Best bet
For a long time, there was a lot of belief in the ‘new manager bounce’ in the Premier League, with new managers coming to clubs and keeping them up in tough situations or getting them into European qualification. Over the recent season, it feels like something that maybe isn’t quite as effective anymore.
I am confident that it won’t be successful for Burnley. They’re a team with very few players who’ll be targeted by Premier League clubs after their relegation, and they lack any sort of killer instinct in front of goal.
I am a little concerned that West Ham could be tired following their Europa League heroics, but that is far outweighed by my belief that this is a historically bad managerial change for Burnley, and that caretaker manager Michael Jackson isn’t the man to keep this club in the Premier League.
For that reason, I’ll be doubling down as my best bet is a West Ham victory.
Pick: West Ham -138 (+100 at bet365)
