It really is a Super Sunday with five Premier League games to end the week. The final of those five matches sees Sheffield United welcoming Newcastle to Bramall Lane. 

Heading into this weekend, the Blades were out of the relegation zone in 17th, purely on goal difference. They’re one of five teams who entered the weekend without a win to their name, but Sheffield United know that they need to start picking up points with just one earned through five games.

After an incredible 2022-23 season which saw Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, there were high hopes for this season, but we’ve not seen them at their best. So far they’ve won just two of their five Premier League games while losing the rest. There’s no shame in losing to Liverpool, Man City or even Brighton, and they are perhaps not struggling as much as many think. 

My best bet for Sheffield United vs. Newcastle focuses on what we’ve seen from both teams so far this season, which is the game being tied at halftime. You can get +150 odds for a draw at the half, which feels like real value. 

This Sheffield United team may only have one point so far this season, but they’ve fought valiantly in each and every game. With the greatest respect to Sheffield United, they don’t have a squad packed with quality and are among the weakest teams in the Premier League. That’s what has made some of their performances so impressive. 

They only lost 2-1 last weekend to Tottenham Hotspur, who scored two goals in injury time to stop the Blades from recording their first win. We also saw the team lose narrowly 2-1 to Man City in August. Both of those games were level at halftime.

One thing we’ve seen from Sheffield United so far this season is that they set up to remain tight and not concede early in games. They didn’t concede to Man City until the 63rd minute and didn’t concede a goal to Spurs until the 98th minute. They will replicate those performances against Newcastle and look to compact the field, make things tight and frustrate Newcastle, ideally trying to hit them on the counter attack. 

If games ended at halftime, then Sheffield United would actually be 12th in the Premier League in part because of their strong defensive performances in the first half of games.

Newcastle have struggled to break teams down at parts this season, as evidenced by a nervy performance against AC Milan in the Champions League earlier in the week. They’re going to find it tough against a Sheffield United side that will be looking to frustrate them. For those reasons, I’ll be backing the draw at halftime.

The first leg of our same-game parlay is our best bet. As mentioned above, I’m expecting Sheffield United to play in a manner which will keep the game close as they look at stop Newcastle and then score on the counter if and when they get the chance.

Our second leg is for Newcastle’s Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to commit a foul. So far this season he’s picked up three yellow cards in the Premier League and has fouled an average of 2.2 times per game. In a tough game on the road, I’m expecting him to commit at least one foul here.

For the third leg, we’re going to look at one of Sheffield United’s players to commit a foul, namely Anel Ahmedhodzic. The Bosnian CB has committed an average of 1.8 fouls per game so far this season, has started all five of the team’s Premier League games, and is going to have a tough day against Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and more.

I think Newcastle should win this game in the long run, not least because they have more quality within their team, but at -222 it’s not a bet I’d recommend. In terms of pure value, I’d argue that a draw at fulltime is the best moneyline wager, with +355 odds. If you want to go further and back the home side to win, then you can get +545.

The bookies are expecting goals with Over 2.5 coming in at -154, but for me, I’d rather take the +125 you can get on Under 2.5 goals. I’m expecting this to be a far tighter game than the odds suggest, so backing the Under makes sense.
