Auston Matthews
Auston Matthews has been one of hockey’s elite finishers for nearly a decade, and that skill has translated well on the world stage.
He’s scored three times in five games, tying for second on a deep American roster with 12 slot chances.
That’s good news against Canadian netminder Jordan Binnington. While Binnington has held up in this tournament, he ranks 56th out of 57 goalies (1,000+ minutes) in high-danger save percentage this season.
Matthews is the type of player who may only need a couple of quality chances to make them count.
Jake Guentzel
Jake Guentzel isn’t a high-volume shooter like some of Team USA’s other stars. Instead, he prioritizes quality over quantity.
He’s generated 11 shots on goal in this tournament, 10 of which came from the slot — over 90% from prime scoring areas.
Guentzel is playing in the Top-6 at 5-on-5 and getting power play time on the second unit. As one of the NHL’s most consistent playoff scorers, this stage shouldn’t be too big for him.
Matt Boldy
Matt Boldy is playing a key role for the United States, and he’s doing it effectively. He ranks fourth among the team’s forwards in ice time and has more shots on net than all but Jack Eichel. He’s also even with Auston Matthews in slot shots, totaling 12 through five appearances.
Boldy has converted 18.5% of his shots in the NHL this season, but his Olympic shooting rate is just 5.5%. This could be the perfect opportunity for some regression to the mean.
