Wednesday’s TNT game features an Eastern Conference tilt as the Metropolitan Division’s New York Rangers host the Atlantic Division’s Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers are home favorites with the total sitting at an even 6.0 according to NHL odds.
These teams just squared off at the beginning of November, with New York claiming a 5-3 victory at Madison Square Garden.
Will history repeat itself, or can Detroit obtain its revenge? Find out in my free NHL picks for the Red Wings vs. Rangers on Wednesday, November 29.
Red Wings vs Rangers odds
Red Wings vs Rangers predictions
The Detroit Red Wings enter this game riding a three-game win streak, but all good things eventually come to an end. Dylan Larkin, their most valuable forward, suffered an undisclosed injury in the Wings’ latest win over the Minnesota Wild, and he has already been ruled out for Wednesday’s contest against the New York Rangers. That is a huge loss for an offense that is due for regression.
While the Red Wings rank fourth in the league in goals scored per game, they rank 30th in expected goals per 60 minutes (xGF/60) at 5-on-5. Whenever you see a disparity like this, it eventually evens out in this league.
Making matters worse is the fact this short-handed offense is now tasked with going against one of the best goaltenders in the world: Igor Shesterkin. Once again putting together a Vezina-worthy campaign, Shesterkin is 8-4 with a .914 SV% and 2.59 GAA.
He is saving 0.141 goals above expected per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, which once again places him among the elite of NHL starting goaltenders. This success is likely to continue against Detroit, a team he has dominated.
Through four career starts against the Wings, Shesterkin is 3-0-1 with a commanding .939 SV% and 1.47 GAA. All three of those wins came by at least a two-goal margin. Speaking of winning by two or more goals, the Rangers have done so in five of their past seven wins, and they'll make that six of eight tonight.
My best bet: Rangers -1.5 (+130 at bet365)

Red Wings vs Rangers same-game parlay
I already highlighted the loss of Larkin, which is going to be detrimental for a lineup that is due for offensive regression and is going short-handed against one of the world’s best netminders. With that said, I still expect Detroit’s blue line to hold its own.
At 5-on-5, both teams rank in the top half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Meanwhile, both teams also rank in the bottom half of the league in xGF/60 at 5-on-5.
There have been six or fewer total goals scored in three of the Wings’ past four games and in three of New York’s past four.

Red Wings vs Rangers moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Rangers opened as a –200 favorite and remain at that price at the time of writing. With such a long number, I think the market will probably hold around the price, although I won’t be shocked if we see New York go a little longer before puck drop due to the aforementioned variables.
That brings us to the total, which opened at 6.0 and also remains at that number. For the sake of the same-game parlay, I would feel safer taking the Under 6.5, but do not think taking a riskier Under at 6.0 for a larger payout is a bad play either.
There were eight total goals scored in the first meeting between these two teams this season, but Shesterkin wasn't between the pipes for the Blueshirts
