Islanders vs Oilers Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Hyman Has Become a Focal Point

The Oilers have been a skating conundrum all season (maybe longer) and it has resulted in another head coach being fired. Will that get them back on track? Our betting picks look to see how Zach Hyman, in particular, will respond after his hat trick.

A pair of slumping teams go head-to-head tonight at Rogers Place when the Edmonton Oilers welcome the New York Islanders, who have dropped four straight games. The hosts — who are favored in NHL odds — haven’t been much better with just one win in their last five outings but the Oilers did pick up two points last time out thanks to a hat trick from Zach Hyman.

Will Hyman lead the charge again for the Oilers against an Islanders squad that’s allowed four or more goals in four straight games? Find out in our Islanders vs Oilers NHL picks and predictions for Monday, November 13.

Islanders vs Oilers predictions

It’s been a strange start to the season for the Edmonton Oilers, who come into tonight’s contest with a 3-9-1 record, sitting second last in the NHL standings ahead of only the Sharks. Despite picking up a win last time out, Edmonton made a big change on Sunday, firing head coach Jay Woodcroft and replacing him with Kris Knoblauch in hopes of sending the team a wake-up call.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have been largely invisible through the Oilers’ first 13 games of the season, combining for just seven goals and 25 points. That’s put a ton of pressure on Edmonton’s secondary options, but fortunately, Zach Hyman has stepped up to the challenge.

Hyman netted a natural hat trick in the first period of Edmonton’s 4-1 win over Seattle on Saturday while recording a team-high four shots — his second straight game with four attempts on net. The winger has generated 36 shots on goal this season, tied for fourth most among all Oilers skaters, to go along with a team-leading seven goals on 51 scoring chances.

Hyman should have plenty of looks again tonight as the Oilers take on a New York Islanders squad giving up 34.6 shots per game — third most in the NHL. New York has allowed at least 30 shots in 10 of its last 11 outings, and 38-plus in five of those games.

With Draisaitl and McDavid still slumping, pressure will be on Hyman to keep firing and producing, so I’ll be looking for him to record Over 3.5 shots as my best bet.

Islanders vs Oilers same-game parlay

Zach Hyman anytime goal

Oilers moneyline

Oilers team total Over 3.5

Hyman’s shot prop is not available for the same-game parlay, so we’ll shift over to taking him as an anytime scorer — a solid bet given he’s got the hot hand with goals in three of his last six outings and leads the club with seven on the season.

With a fresh face behind the bench, I’ll also look for the Oilers to earn the win for their new boss while scoring Over 3.5 goals in the process.

It should help the hosts that the Islanders defense has been pretty porous this season, surrendering at least four goals in four straight contests and five of their last six. Ilya Sorokin, New York’s likely starter, has given up four or more goals in four of his last five appearances while allowing five in two of those outings.

Sorokin owns a mediocre .907 save percentage and 3.24 goals against average over eight outings this season, so Hyman and the Oilers offense should be able to put some pucks in the net tonight.

Islanders vs Oilers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Edmonton opened as the home favorite for tonight’s contest at -163 on the moneyline with the total set at 6 goals. As mentioned, I like the Oilers to pick up two points tonight and I’ll also go with the Over given how bad both teams have been defensively.

It’s hard to say whether a coaching change will be the spark that the Oilers need to get back on track, but their front office clearly believes it’ll make a difference. The real key for Edmonton will be to get more out of McDavid and Draisaitl, who haven’t been nearly as dominant as in past seasons.

But even if the Oilers stars have another quiet night, the hosts should still enjoy a clear edge on the attack. Six players have at least 10 points for Edmonton while that number is just two for an offensively-starved New York team that’s averaging 2.46 goals per game — 30th in the NHL. Pair that with the Islanders’ crumbling defense and I think the Oilers should earn their second straight win.

Speaking of defense, both clubs have allowed goals in bunches of late, which is why I like the Over on 6 goals. Prior to a 4-1 win against Seattle, Edmonton had given up at least four goals in four straight contests while Stuart Skinner, its likely starter, owns a dreadful .861 save percentage this year.
