The playoff hopes are long dead for both sides, but the Minnesota Vikings are better equipped to win in Week 16.

The Minnesota Vikings have been eliminated from the playoffs, but have been seeing positive signs from J.J. McCarthy, as they put their two-game winning streak on the line at the Meadowlands against the 2-12 New York Giants.

My early Vikings vs. Giants predictions and NFL picks for December 21 expect Minnesota to continue to build momentum with its young quarterback.

Early Vikings vs Giants spread pick: Vikings -2.5

After a dreadful start to the season for J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings' offense, they've found some signs of life and hope for the future in the past two games.

While those games were against some bad defenses, this week will be no different, as the New York Giants rank 29th in points allowed and 30th in yards allowed. They've allowed 296 yards of offense in every single outing this season and 400+ yards in five.

The Giants have looked solid with Jaxson Dart at quarterback, but that has not translated to wins, as they've lost eight consecutive games.

While seven of those eight defeats were to teams with winning records, they lost last week to a struggling Commanders team without Jayden Daniels.

The Vikings' defense has been hit-or-miss this season, but they're excellent at pressuring quarterbacks and will be able to get after Dart.

While I like the future of Dart much more than McCarthy, this matchup will go in favor of “Nine” with his complement of talent around him.

Early Vikings vs Giants total pick: Over 43.5

The Giants have played in a ton of high-scoring games this season, and with the way the Vikings have been playing the last two weeks, I expect this to be another one. Over its eight-game losing streak, New York has allowed 31.5 points per game.

That includes offenses that have not put up a ton of points, like the Denver Broncos, who scored 33, and the Philadelphia Eagles, who scored 38. Even the Commanders sans Jayden Daniels scored 29 last week.

The Vikes have scored 65 points in the last two weeks and have averaged 20.9 points per game in McCarthy’s eight starts this season. They'll also be able to convert their drives to touchdowns, specifically by running the ball.

Minny's offense ranks sixth in the NFL in rushing in the red zone. Meanwhile, the Giants defense ranks dead last in that category. I expect both teams to reach the 20s in this game, and it may even soar Over this total.
