Cooper Rush is at the helm for Atlanta, but Bijan Robinson holds the key to locking in our Panthers vs. Falcons prediction for today’s NFC South matchup.

My Panthers vs. Falcons prediction and NFL picks call for Atlanta to get its first victory of the season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium after an opener where the Falcons couldn’t move the ball, and Carolina couldn’t stop anyone.

Both NFC South rivals are searching for their first win, with the Panthers serving as 2.5-point favorites — a line that has grown as today’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX gets closer, thanks in part to Atlanta’s injury problems at quarterback.

 TOP PICK
Panthers vs Falcons prediction: Falcons +2.5

The line has grown from 1.5 to start the week. I’d stick with the Atlanta Falcons and the points up to 55%.

Atlanta’s quarterback situation is no longer up in the air, with Cooper Rush officially named the starter for Sunday. Rush was a full participant in practice this week and will make his second straight start after throwing for 143 yards and a touchdown in the opener.

That removes some of the uncertainty surrounding this matchup, and Rush should also benefit from having a full week to prepare with the offense. More importantly, Atlanta will have Bijan Robinson against a Carolina Panthers defense that gave up 291 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground last week.

Robinson gives Atlanta a clear path to taking pressure off Rush, and I’m happy to grab the Falcons as home underdogs.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Robinson led the NFL in yards from scrimmage last year and opened this season with 173 receiving and rushing yards. He forced Steelers defenders to miss 12 tackles and averaged 4.7 yards after contact. The Panthers missed 11 tackles in their opener.

Panthers vs Falcons combo

The total is one of the lowest you’ll see, despite the Panthers setting opening-day points records on both sides of the ball. While Carolina could struggle to contain Robinson, the overall defense should be better. The Falcons with Rush  at quarterback are far from the explosive offense of Ben Johnson and the Bears.

The Falcons’ defense should also have a better day than the Bears did against the Panthers. Atlanta allowed just 226 yards to the Steelers, its best opening-day performance since 1977. The Atlanta defense leads the NFL in total EPA and success rate.

Robinson is used to facing the Panthers. In six career games against Carolina, he has averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 85 rushing yards per game. Those numbers have improved to 5.6 yards per carry and 110 yards per game over the last two years.

Panthers vs Falcons combo

  • Falcons +2.5
  • Under 43.5
  • Bijan Robinson anytime touchdown

Panthers vs Falcons touchdown scorer: Drake London

While we went with Robinson to score in our combo, we’ll go with someone who offers a little more upside on the probability for our player TD prop.

Drake London had five 100-yard games in eight weeks with Penix throwing to him last season and accounted for three-quarters of Atlanta’s end-zone targets over that span. London has also scored a career-best four touchdowns in eight career games against the Panthers.

Panthers vs Falcons player prop: Bryce Young Over 0.5 interceptions

While Bryce Young has progressed as a quarterback over the last four years on a number of fronts, avoiding the big mistake has not been one of them. He had a career-high 11 interceptions last season and threw a pick in the opener against Chicago as well, giving Young interceptions in three straight games.

Atlanta held Pittsburgh to 58 rushing yards in the opener and 3-for-13 on third down. A similar performance will force Young to try to make plays, and that’s when bad things can happen for the Panthers. The Falcons’ pass rush has been hit by injuries, but a deep crop of edge rushers hit Aaron Rodgers six times and pressured him 14 times in the opener.

Panthers vs Falcons weather

It will be hot and humid in Atlanta, with temperatures around 88 degrees and cloudy skies. However, Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a retractable roof, which should prevent the weather from having much of an impact on the game.
