Giants vs Seahawks picks and predictions

Bookies can sense that bettors are ready to fade the Giants en masse, partly explaining why the Jaguars were three-point home favorites against New York in Week 7. Perhaps the oddsmakers were a week early, but they’re going back to the well by making the Seahawks home favorites in Week 8. Smart bettors should side with Seattle on Sunday.

The Giants shouldn’t be patting themselves on the back too hard despite holding a 6-1 record. Each of their first seven games has been decided by one possession, and no team in NFL history has compiled this good a record when that was the case. Big Blue’s most recent victory was as last gasp as it gets, as Jacksonville wide-out Christian Kirk was stopped from scoring the game-tying touchdown at the one-yard line as time expired.

The Seahawks may be two games behind New York in the overall NFC standings, but they answered a couple of tough questions last week when they beat the Chargers, 37-23. That was their first victory over a winning team this year, and they also proved they could win without wide receiver DK Metcalf, who left due to injury in the second quarter.

Metcalf is questionable going into this tilt, but Marquise Goodwin seems capable of filling his shoes, as he caught two touchdown passes from former Giants backup Geno Smith last week.

It was just another example of Seattle’s “next man up” mentality, as running back Kenneth Walker III has caught fire since Rashaad Penny suffered a season-ending injury. Walker rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns in Week 7, and draws a plum matchup with New York’s 28th-ranked run stoppers (144.4 yards allowed per game).

The Giants are trending well, but not to be outdone, the Seahawks are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight home games against teams with winning road records, and have covered in six of their last seven games played in October.

My best bet: Seahawks -3 (-107 at PointsBet)

Giants vs Seahawks spread analysis

New York’s offense will only go as far as Saquon Barkley will take it, so Seattle will have a big advantage under center with Geno Smith squaring off against Daniel Jones

Incredibly, Smith leads the NFL with a 73.5 completion percentage, and is third in quarterback rating (107.7) behind only Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs (109.5) and Josh Allen of the Bills (109.1), the two frontrunners for NFL MVP. Smith had one of his finest games of 2022 when he completed 20 of 27 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers last week.

The well-traveled West Virginia product could pile up the points early, as he holds an incredible 123.7 passer rating in the first half this year. Many bettors have been waiting for the other shoe to drop with Smith, but that doesn’t appear to be in the offing on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Jones has head manned the NFL’s third-worst passing attack this year, averaging a mere 160.9 yards per game through the air. While it’s true that the Giants have a dearth of solid wide receivers, it’s not as though Jones has demonstrated many reasons for Big Blue fans to keep the faith in his four-year career.

Giants vs Seahawks Over/Under analysis

It’s been a season to remember for Under bettors so far, with nearly 60% of games going below the total. Over bettors could be understandably hesitant to play this mid-40s total in a game featuring two run-first teams, but it might just be the right side.

We’ve already touched upon how poorly the Giants’ run-stoppers have played, but the Seahawks’ defense has been just as bad in this department. Seattle is allowing 149.7 rushing yards per game, 29th in the NFL, even after holding a run-averse Chargers squad to 53 yards on the ground in Week 7.

It would be difficult to dispute that Barkley is better than any running back the Seahawks have seen this season, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see him blow right by the 100-yard mark on Sunday.

Walker might be able to match Barkley on the other side of the ball the way he is trending, and the late-blooming Smith has become a significant threat through the air for Seattle. This one may not turn into a track meet, but there are enough game-breaking players on both sides coupled with some susceptible defenses to cash the Over here.
