Dolphins vs Browns predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Dolphins vs Browns spread pick: Dolphins +2.5

-110 at FanDuel

Both the Miami Dolphins and the Cleveland Browns come into this with a 1-5 record. When picking a side to cover the spread in a game like this, it’s a simple choice between backing a team who can put up points, and one who simply cannot.

No team has scored fewer points per game than the Browns, who’ve averaged just 13.7 points each week. That’s a dismal showing, and despite the change at quarterback from Joe Flacco to Dillon Gabriel, the scoring has still remained low with just 26 points scored in both of the rookie’s games combined.

The caveat is that while the Browns' offense ranks in the Bottom 3 in offensive DVOA, their defense does have real talent and sits in the Top 10 in terms of defensive DVOA. Their opponents on Sunday, the Dolphins, are dead-last.

While defense matters, the Dolphins have put up 21+ points in every game since their season opener. They’ve scored exactly 27 points three times in that span.

It’s unlikely that the Dolphins finish at .500 or better, but there are some glimmers of hope that their offense could at least pick them up some wins. They’ve been close to victories over the past two weeks, only losing to the Panthers by three points and Chargers, this past Sunday, by two.

The Browns have failed to cover the spread in four of their six games this season, and with their offense really struggling, it’s smarter to take the more dynamic offense and the points this Sunday.

Early Dolphins vs Browns total pick: Under 39.5

-115 at FanDuel

This matchup is poised to see the Over win with such a low number on the board.

The Dolphins have been Over juggernauts this season with five of six games breaking that mark. The Dolphins have consistently found ways to put up points, putting up 21+ points in each of their previous five games.

The Browns, for as talented as they are on defense, are still giving up an average of 24.3 points per game. That is the 11th-most per game, although it does trail the Dolphins’ 29.0.

Jaylen Waddle has really stepped up since Tyreek Hill went down and has averaged over 100 receiving yards across the past two games, while De’Von Achane is fresh from his best performance of the season. If Mike McDaniel can scheme ways to get the ball into Achane’s hands, then they put up plenty of points here.

But the Dolphins can’t stop giving up points either, and the Browns have a great possibility of breaking 17 points to score a season-high total. This game will give Gabriel a real chance to show what he can do under center, with the Dolphins far easier to face than the Steelers or Vikings.
