49ers computer picks

Brock Purdy Over 227.5 passing yards (-111)

Projection: 231.5 yards

Brock Purdy had been the hottest quarterback in the league until he ran into the buzzsaw that is the Seahawks defense last weekend. In that game, Purdy threw for a season-low 127 yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles' pass defense is not on Seattle’s level, but it does rank fourth in the NFL in Def Passing DVOA.

Seattle laid a pretty good blueprint on how to shut down Purdy last week, and Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is more than bright enough to follow the plan.

I’ll start the week off by disagreeing with my computer bud, and will take the Purdy Under.

Christian McCaffrey Over 56.5 rushing yards (-114)

Projection: 66.9 yards

It’s playoff time, and when the season is on the line, the best coaches will find a way to get the ball into their best player’s hands.

During the 49ers' scorching hot December stretch, Kyle Shanahan was giving Christian McCaffrey at least 20 carries per game.

After a season-low 8 carries last week against the Seahawks, I expect Shanahan to pound the ball with CMC.

There have been nine games this season in which McCaffrey has carried the ball at least 20 times.

In eight of those games, he went for 57 yards or more, which is the number on this prop.

I’ll agree with the computer here and take the Over.

Jauan Jennings Over 45.5 receiving yards (-109)

Projection: 50.9 yards

It will be hard to trust Jauan Jennings hitting this number, particularly if fellow WR Ricky Pearsall suits up against the Eagles.

Jennings has gone Under 45.5 yards receiving in each of the last four games that Pearsall has played in.

It’s clear that Purdy trusts Pearsall over Jennings, and that the San Francisco 49ers offense goes into a different gear when the injury-prone Pearsall is in the lineup.

I’ll disagree with the computer on Jennings and take the Under.

George Kittle Under 59.5 receiving yards (-110)

Projection: 58.3 yards

The Eagles' defense has completely shut down opposing tight ends over the past month-plus.

In Philly’s last six games, the defense has not allowed an opposing tight end to catch more than 36 yards in a game, let alone 59.5 yards, which is the number here for George Kittle

Of note, Kittle missed Week 17 with an ankle sprain. In his return last week against the Seahawks, he had just 29 yards receiving.

Kittle might still be banged up, and I don’t love the matchup.

I’ll agree with our AI and take the Under.

Eagles computer picks

Jalen Hurts Over 206.5 passing yards (-110)

Projection: 232.7 yards

In the last three games Jalen Hurts has started for the Eagles (Philly rested the QB last week), the team went 3-0.

Prior to that, the three-game win streak was a three-game losing streak.

Interestingly enough, Hurts threw Under 200 yards in each of the Eagles’ wins, and Over 230 yards in each of the losses.

Nick Sirianni knows where his bread is buttered, and it’s not with Hurts chucking it all over the place.

Even against a weak 49ers pass defense, I’ll take the Hurts Under. The computer disagrees.

Saquon Barkley Under 83.5 rushing yards (-110)

Projection: 71.2 yards

Saquon Barkley’s playoff run last year was the stuff of legend as he averaged 124.7 rushing yards in the Eagles’ four postseason games.

In three-of-four of those games, Barkley carried the ball at least 25 times.

The outlier was the NFC Championship game against Washington, in which he carried the ball just 15 times, but Barkley spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench that day with the game out of hand.

Barkley carried the ball 25 times or more in just one game during the regular season.

While it’s unlikely Barkley can put on his Superman cape once again in January, Sirianni will likely see if something close to the same magic can be replicated.

Just based on the amount of attempts he’ll likely get against the Niners, I like the Over for Barkley. The computer again disagrees.

A.J. Brown Over 65.5 receiving yards (-110)

Projection: 77.9 yards

A.J. Brown had his most productive stretch this season during the Eagles’ three-game losing streak we outlined above. The WR went for over 100 yards in each of those games.

In Philly’s last three games with their normal lineup, all Eagles wins, Brown averaged just 59 yards receiving.

Again, the Eagles are well aware that their offense functions better when the run game is prioritized.

The rough patch with the computer continues: I disagree, and I’ll take the Brown Under.

Dallas Goedert Over 37.5 receiving yards

Projection: 44.1 yards

When an opposing tight end is the focal point of a passing attack, the Niners' defense does a fine job. San Francisco held Indy’s Tyler Warren to just three catches for 30 yards on Dec. 22.

But plenty of low-to-middle tier tight ends have found success against the San Fran D this season.

On Dec. 28, the Bears’ Colston Loveland popped for his second-highest output of the season with 94 yards.

On Dec. 14, Tennessee’s Gunnar Helm led his team in receiving with 49 yards. It was his second-highest total of the season.

On Nov. 30, the Browns’ Harold Fannin led his team in receiving with 49 yards.

Dallas Goedert should be able to find plenty of openings against this suspect Niners pass D.

The computer and I end things on a high note, agreeing on the Goedert Over.
