A pair of teams that shockingly struggled with Oregon State to start the year meet under the Friday night lights as Houston travels to Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, to play Texas Tech in a top-25 matchup.
The Red Raiders are a 7.5-point favorite at home, and my Houston vs. Texas Tech predictions and college football picks are backing Shiel Wood's defense to make the difference.

Early Houston vs Texas Tech spread pick: Texas Tech -7.5
Texas Tech hasn't been enjoying the hottest start to the season. In Week 1, new starting QB Will Hammond was rusty in his first game back from a torn ACL, and in Week 2, the Red Raiders needed to travel to Corvallis to play a feisty Oregon State in the pouring rain.
Despite the uneven start to the season, Texas Tech remains a college football national championship odds contender because of its front seven. The Red Raiders are fourth nationally in early-down EPA per play and ranked 11th overall by SP+.
If Tech can pressure Conner Weigman, he'll make mistakes. Weigman was top 20 in the P4 turnover-worthy play rate last season (3.9%) and posted just a 72.2% adjusted completion rate. The Red Raiders have racked up 33 pressures in two games, with All-American AJ Holmes Jr. leading the way.
If Houston falls behind early and can't run the ball consistently, Willie Fritz's team will be in trouble on the road. I like Tech to cover up to -8.5.

Early Houston vs Texas Tech total pick: Over 52.5
Houston's defense is hard to gauge, but with it ranking outside the top 40 in returning production (58%) and allowing 376 passing yards at home during Braden Atkinson's first start for Oregon State, there's reason for concern.
The Cougars are ranked just 44th on defense by SP+, 81st in EPA per pass, and 96th in early-down EPA per play. They could struggle to pressure Hammond, with the Red Raiders boasting one of the best offensive lines in the Big 12 (credited with allowing five pressures and one sack in two games).
And even with Texas Tech's defense being the X-factor, the Cougars should find enough scoring success to cash the Over. They're 11th in third/fourth down success (69.2%), and that's an area in which the Red Raiders' defense struggles. The unit is 112th in third/fourth down success on defense (60%).
I'm projecting Tech to win at home 33-24
