One of the best teams in baseball hosts one of the worst as the Los Angeles Dodgers (53-32) host the Chicago White Sox (28-56) for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
The books have priced the Dodgers at a premium, so I’m buying back on the Under on Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s strikeout prop with my White Sox vs. Dodgers predictions and MLB picks for Tuesday, July 1.
White Sox vs Dodgers prediction
My White Sox vs Dodgers best bet: Yoshinobu Yamamoto Under 6.5 strikeouts (-105 at bet365)
⚾ Pick Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers are supposed to cruise in this spot, and the books know it.
Good luck finding any value on the huge favorite. The Dodgers are priced up to -315 on the moneyline and are -2.5 on the run line, and most of their player props have similarly been priced through the roof.
I’m taking this opportunity to sell high, given the enormous amount of inflation in these lines.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto showed some signs of wear and tear in June with an ERA of 4.21. His BA saw a notable increase to .258 (.146 in May), as did his WHIP to 1.40 (0.80 in May).
The easiest explanation is that his fastball just wasn’t working the same.
After holding hitters to a .118 BA and .114 SLG on the four-seamer in May, he saw those numbers jump to a .333 BA and .542 SLG in June. The 26-year-old throws the heater 37% of the time, so a drop-off in effectiveness on his most-used pitch is a bit alarming.
Yamamoto displayed newfound swing-and-miss stuff to start the season (32.6% K rate in March/April), but his strikeouts have steadily decreased each month (28.1% in May and 23.6% in June).
He faces a Chicago White Sox team that certainly isn’t making any waves this season. Still, the lineup has been difficult to punch out lately with an 18% K rate (fifth-lowest) against right-handed pitchers in the last 10 days.
The books have set Yamamoto’s strikeout prop at 6.5 for this contest.
He’s gone Under this number in four of his last five starts. Going back a little further, he’s thrown fewer than seven strikeouts in eight of his last 11 outings.
White Sox vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)
Yoshinobu Yamamoto Under 6.5 strikeouts
Shohei Ohtani Over 1.5 total bases
White Sox Under 3.5 total runs
🚀 SGP Analysis
Shohei Ohtani is at the peak of his powers and has a 185 wRC+ at Dodger Stadium against right-handed pitching. Chicago starter Shane Smith started the season hot but collapsed in June with a 5.60 ERA and 1.64 WHIP, so Ohtani stands a great chance of doling out the damage on Tuesday night.
Although Chicago has avoided Ks against righties lately, that doesn’t mean that the White Sox have a fearsome lineup. Their numbers in the last 10 days against RHP (70 wRC+ and .269 wOBA) don’t inspire confidence against Yamamoto, and the Dodgers’ bullpen is at full force after a day of rest on Monday.
