Two underachieving American League squads will meet at Angel Stadium on Monday night as the Chicago White Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels.

The White Sox fell to four games under .500 before barely avoiding an embarrassing sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. The Angels, who have dropped four of their last six, beat the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in a tense yet very ugly game that featured an all-out brawl in the second inning.

White Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Lucas Giolito (4-4, 5.40 ERA): Giolito has been going through a nightmarish month of June, authoring a 9.00 ERA over four starts. His WHIP in that span is 1.95, and he’s served up seven home runs.

Noah Syndergaard (4-6, 3.86 ERA): Syndergaard will try to avoid his fifth straight loss when he starts for the Angels tonight. He’s posted a 5.31 ERA over his last four outings while producing a poor 13-7 strikeout/walk ratio.

White Sox vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

Both the White Sox and the Angels have been going bad of late, and starters Lucas Giolito and Noah Syndergaard have done little to help stop the bleeding. Fortunately for L.A., Giolito has been even worse than Syndergaard, and that should enable the Halos to grab the win tonight.

Giolito’s 9.00 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over four starts this month are horrifyingly large numbers, yet he’s pitched 21 innings. Part of the reason why is likely that manager Tony La Russa doesn’t trust his bullpen, which is 20th in the majors with a 4.19 ERA on the campaign. With high-leverage men Liam Hendriks and Aaron Bummer on the shelf, the unit's depth is being tested even further.

The Angels should be able to grab their fair share of runs early on, and Mike Trout figures to be the one to drive them in. He has a 1.092 OPS in June with 17 RBI to his credit. Not to be underestimated is reigning AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, who is batting .282 in June with five homers and 15 RBI.

Syndergaard has struggled for much of 2022, but even he should be able to keep this Chicago lineup in check. The South Siders scored only seven runs in four games at home against the Orioles over the weekend.

“Thor” owns a 2.39 ERA at home this year (37 2-3 innings), so he should find solace in that and help guide his team to an early lead. Then it will be up to the Angels’ bullpen to lock down the win to cash for moneyline bettors.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (-138 at FanDuel)

Over/Under analysis

Like the White Sox, the Angels have had an unreliable bullpen for much of the season. Over bettors should be fairly confident that this game will eventually clear the total.

L.A. is 17th in relief ERA (3.95 ERA), with offseason pickups Aaron Loup (4.39 ERA) and Ryan Tepera (3.94 ERA) both proving to be plenty disappointing. Closer Raisel Iglesias has converted 13 of 15 save chances, but could be disciplined by MLB after tossing a carton of sunflower seeds onto the field in the aftermath of Sunday’s brawl with Seattle.

If Chicago starts a comeback, look for Luis Robert and Jose Abreu to be at the center of it. Robert has a .306 batting average with 19 homers in June, while Abreu has a .898 OPS this month.

Trend bettors should note that the Over is 8-2 in the last 10 games between these two clubs in Los Angeles and that the White Sox have gone 8-3-1 to the Over in their last 12 road games.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (-118 at FanDuel)

Best bet

Taylor Ward has been a highly-effective leadoff hitter for the Halos this season, and he should set the table for L.A.’s offense once more on Monday.

Ward is riding a seven-game hitting streak, reaching base in 14 of his 32 plate appearances. He’s crossed the plate seven times in that stretch, with Trout and Ohtani playing a major role in his success. Ward also drove himself in on one occasion with a solo homer last Monday.

He’s been incredibly dangerous at home this year, authoring a .347 batting average and 1.160 OPS. Look for Ward to give his teammates plenty of RBI chances in this one and eventually cross the plate successfully.

Pick: Taylor Ward Over 0.5 runs (-141)
