The Colorado Rockies have some making up to do and with a well-rested bullpen, they'll look to Kyle Freeland to help them earn a bounce-back against the visiting Detroit Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers took their series opener against the Colorado Rockies yesterday, and the two clubs will hit Coors Field for a doubleheader to wrap up the three-game set Thursday, May 8.

Game 1 will feature Detroit righty Casey Mize and Colorado left Kyle Freeland, and my top MLB picks and Tigers vs. Rockies predictions expect Freeland to have a tough time pitching deep into this afternoon’s contest.

Tigers vs Rockies prediction

My Tigers vs Rockies best bet: Kyle Freeland Under 17.5 outs recorded (-120 at bet365)

Colorado Rockies lefty Kyle Freeland has been roughed up this season to the tune of an 8.53 ERA across a pair of home starts, and he’ll face a strong Detroit Tigers lineup this afternoon.

Detroit enters with a fifth-ranked .345 wOBA and fourth-ranked .194 ISO against southpaws for the campaign.

Freeland has been teed up for a .406 wOBA and .929 OPS at Coors Field, and while there’s definite improvement ahead considering his .413 BABIP is unsustainably high and his 3.18 xFIP is solid, I’m not anticipating a drastic swing in his results Thursday afternoon.

Plus, the soft-tossing lefty has pitched fewer than six frames in three of his past four starts, and he’s allowing a healthy 42.1% hard-hit rate and sports negative pitch values on two of his three most frequent offerings, per FanGraphs.

Additionally, the Rockies were off Monday and today’s doubleheader is the result of Tuesday’s game being rained out, so the Colorado bullpen has plenty of rested arms.

Tigers vs Rockies same-game parlay (SGP)

Tigers moneyline

Spencer Torkelson 2+ hits, runs, and RBI

Kyle Freeland Under 17.5 outs recorded

Detroit definitely has the pitching edge in Game 1 of today’s doubleheader, with Casey Mize taking a tidy 2.70 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 4.13 xFIP to the hill. There’s a splash of statistical correction coming his way with the xFIP notably higher than his ERA, and Mize isn’t going to maintain his solid .240 BABIP and 91.8% strand rate long term.

Still, there’s ample room for negative regression before there’s cause for concern for 2018 first overall pick.

Turning to Detroit 2020 first overall pick Spencer Torkelson, he’s also put it all together to start 2025, and has absolutely raked against left-handed hurlers.

Torkelson sports a monster .419 wOBA, and .415 ISO with a .360 on-base percentage against southpaws, and he’s hit the Over in this market in four of his past five games.
