Red Sox vs Angels Picks and Predictions: LA Haunted by Its Demons

Los Angeles has lost 13 games in a row but the most recent came at a greater cost, with Mike Trout suffering an injury in Tuesday's loss to Boston. Our MLB betting picks don't expect the banged-up Angels to challenge the Red Sox.

The Los Angeles Angels were so close to snapping their 12-game losing streak on Tuesday, but the Boston Red Sox scored in the 10th inning and handed the Angels a franchise-record 13th consecutive loss.

The Red Sox will be going after their seventh straight victory Wednesday night.

To make matters worse for the Angels, superstar Mike Trout left the game with tightness in his groin and is questionable for Wednesday’s game. The team is already without third baseman Anthony Rendon, who is out with an injury.

Can depleted L.A. get its first win in three weeks, or will Boston add to L.A.’s misery?

Red Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Nathan Eovaldi (3-2, 3.41 ERA): Eovaldi’s last two starts were wins but it’s hard to take away anything from those performances since they were against lowly Oakland and Baltimore. Against the AL West first-place Houston Astros on May 17, Eovaldi couldn’t get out of the second inning, getting blasted for nine runs on eight hits, including five home runs.

The righty’s other loss on the season was against another team with a winning record, the Chicago White Sox. In that start on May 6, Eovaldi surrendered three runs on six hits in five innings.

Reid Detmers (2-2, 4.20 ERA): After being the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season a month ago, the rookie left-hander has had some rough outings. He faced Texas twice in a home and home on May 17 and 25 and was rocked both starts. He allowed three runs on three hits in 3 2-3 innings, including two home runs. In the second game, he went six innings, and gave up five runs on five hits and another two homers.

In his last outing six days ago, he faced the New York Yankees in the Bronx and went 4 1-3 innings, allowing five hits but no runs. He faced the Red Sox on May 4, going 4 2-3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits.

Red Sox vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Run line analysis

The slide for the Angels gets longer every day and now they are going to try and snap a 13-game losing streak with a dinged-up Mike Trout. Trout felt tightness in his groin in Tuesday’s game and was pulled by interim manager Phil Nevin.

Trout didn’t seem too concerned but Nevin said after the game he would be overly cautious with his best player. That might mean holding him out of Wednesday’s game or putting him in at designated hitter, moving Shohei Ohtani to the outfield.

If Trout can’t play, that is a lot of offense the Angels are losing. Trout had been mired in an 0-26 slump but broke that last night with two hits. Trout leads the team with 14 home runs and has a .284 batting average.

The Angels are already without third baseman Anthony Rendon, who had 36 hits and 23 RBI before he went on the shelf.

Both starting pitchers have had dubious performances against quality teams. Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi has had six starts against teams with winning records and has two losses and four no-decisions.

Reid Detmers has the highest ERA of the Angels’ starters, at 4.20, and hasn’t had a win since May 10.

The two previous games between the Angels and Red Sox were decided by a run, but with the Angels’ injury concerns and shaky pitching, I like Boston to break out tonight.

Prediction: Red Sox -1.5 (+105 at BetRivers)

Over/Under analysis

The Under has hit four of six times in Anaheim, but the Red Sox and Angels will be facing pitchers that have been shaky as of late.

Reid Detmers has an ERA of 4.20 for the Angels, while Nathan Eovaldi is at 3.41 and is prone to giving up runs in bunches.

Both offenses can take advantage of poor pitching. The Red Sox are third in the majors in batting average at .260, led by J.D. Martinez who is hitting .359, second-best in baseball. They are second in hits and fourth in RBI.

The Angels can get runners across the plate as well, ninth in RBI and runs, eighth in hits, and sixth in home runs.

A key to the Over hitting is if Trout plays. From published reports, the injury wasn’t that serious, and an MRI nor X-rays were not taken. Expect Trout at the very least to be the designated hitter.

It’s likely that one or both starting pitchers will give up a bunch of runs. This should hit the Over, maybe even before the relievers get in the game.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (+100 at BetRivers)

Best bet

Shohei Ohtani hasn’t had a home run the entire month of June and he is way overdue. The two-way player has 11 on the season, had seven in May, and averages 1.5 dingers a week.

Ohtani has hit eight of those home runs against right-handed pitching. Five of them have been at Anaheim Stadium and seven of them were at night.

He will be facing Eovaldi, who has surrendered 16 on the season, second-most in the majors.

Look for Ohtani to get his first homer in June from a pitcher who is susceptible to giving them.

Pick: Shohei Ohtani to hit a home run (+275)
