You might not think it when you see Tyler Mahle vs. Tanner Houck, but my Rangers vs. Red Sox predictions think we’ll get treated to a sneaky good pitcher’s duel on Wednesday night.
Mahle has been dealing for Texas this season, while Houck has pulled himself out of an early-season slump for Boston. So it’s no surprise that my MLB picks for Wednesday, May 7 target the total.

My Rangers vs Red Sox best bet: Under 5 F5 (-115 at bet365)
The Texas Rangers' bats have started to wake up in the last couple of games, which includes taking the opener of this series against the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6-1.
But a couple of good games doesn’t mean their problems are suddenly solved. The Rangers are going to have to get more consistent production from guys not named Corey Seager.
Remember, this lineup was doing so poorly that the team fired its offensive coordinator. And even with their recent offensive outburst, Texas still ranks 25th in batting average, 27th in OPS, and 25th in wRC+.
Now, you see a matchup with Tanner Houck and his 6.38 ERA, and you may think it’s a spot for the Rangers to get back on track. But Houck has also pulled himself out of his slump.
The right-hander has pitched to a 3.50 ERA and limited opponents to a .641 OPS while striking out 19 in 18 innings pitched over his last three starts. He’s also coming off his best start of the season, holding the Toronto Blue Jays to one run on four hits over seven innings.
Countering Houck is Rangers’ right-hander Tyler Mahle. The 30-year-old looks great following two injury-shortened seasons.
Mahle hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start this season, and one earned run or fewer in six of the seven times he’s taken the ball.
Now, he hasn’t been as unhittable as those numbers suggest, but his 3.45 expected ERA is very respectable. The right-hander creates a lot of soft contact with a great pitch mix that includes a four-seam fastball and a splitter.
Mahle faces a Red Sox lineup that definitely has some pop, but it has gone a bit quiet in May. Boston ranks 20th in OPS and 23rd in wRC+ through the first five games of this month.
Pitching will be the story early in this one. And with two shaky at times bullpens, give me this game to stay Under the F5 total.
