The Texas Rangers continue their West Coast road trip with a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels beginning Monday night.

Game 1 offers a stellar starting pitching matchup between Jacob deGrom and Yusei Kikuchi, so I’m eyeing the Under. Read more about why in my Rangers vs. Angels predictions and MLB picks for Monday, July 7.

Rangers vs Angels prediction

My Rangers vs Angels best bet: Under 7.5 (-115 at Caesars)

The Texas Rangers haven’t been able to generate much offense this season. Naturally, that’s led to many low-scoring games — they’ve only played to the Over in 32 of their 90 games.

Yusei Kikuchi is in the midst of a career year, sporting a pretty 2.81 ERA through 102 1/3 IP. He’s allowed no more than two earned runs in 10 of his last 12 starts and has been particularly lethal at home (1.12 ERA).

Texas has not hit lefties well, ranking 25th in both wRC+ (75) and wOBA (.276) across the last 20 days. The Rangers are 6-14 against southpaws on the year.

The good news for Texas is that ace Jacob deGrom takes the mound, and he’s at the peak of his powers. The flamethrowing veteran remains an all-around pitcher, suppressing hard contact (80th percentile barrel rate), limiting free passes (5.4% walk rate), and generating punchouts (25.9% strikeout rate).

The 37-year-old ranks second among qualified starters in Pitching+ (121) and has allowed no more than two earned runs in 14 consecutive starts.

The Angels have been a Top-10 bullpen in the last 20 days (3.34 ERA), whereas the Rangers used only two relievers yesterday.

Under 7.5

Angels moneyline

Yusei Kikuchi Over 6.5 strikeouts

The Rangers are coming off a 4-1 loss on Sunday Night Baseball — a spot I don’t love for them — while the Angels are looking to bounce back after getting swept by Toronto to conclude a six-game road trip.

The Los Angeles Angels have been the much better team at the plate and in the bullpen, and the Rangers have been bad against lefties (6-14) and on the road (18-27).

Meanwhile, Kikuchi has recorded 7+ strikeouts in four consecutive starts (9.5 average) and has a 26.2% strikeout rate at home.
