The Detroit Tigers are a home underdog against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight, but I think most baseball people would rather be Detroit at this point. The Tigers have won six straight and nine of 10, including Friday’s series opener.

The Phillies have trouble scoring and may not be able to trust their ace. That’s why my Phillies vs. Tigers predictions and MLB picks call for a Detroit upset.

Who will win Phillies vs Tigers today: Tigers moneyline (+124)

The Philadelphia Phillies are nine games over .500; the Detroit Tigers are six under, but things aren’t clear-cut. The Tigers actually have a superior run differential. At +31, they’re third best in the A.L., while the Phillies are -17.

Detroit’s 10-2 Friday win was the fourth time in five games the Tigers have topped five runs, and they’ve now done it in seven of 10.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are starting Cristopher Sanchez. Everyone in the organization said he was fine after getting rocked his last time out, but with an 84 OPS+ in July, the Phillies aren’t hitting well enough to overcome another tough night for their ace.

I'd play this down to +115.

Covers COVERS INTEL: While Cristopher Sanchez and the team said he felt fine against the Royals, his pitch usage said otherwise. His first five sinkers were all balls, and he threw it just 37% of the time, down from 42% on the year. He used it less as the game went on, and that seemed to make his changeup less effective as batters felt more comfortable waiting on it. All three homers were off the change, and he had a swing-and-miss rate of 32% on it, down significantly from 45% on the year.

Phillies vs Tigers Over/Under pick: Under 7.5 (-112)

The Phillies have scored two or fewer in four of the last six games, and the Tigers have allowed three or fewer in six straight and nine of 10. Detroit starts Casey Mize, who has a 2.64 ERA, 2.72 FIP, 0.977 WHIP, and is striking out a batter an inning, all career bests. He has a 1.32 ERA and 0.585 WHIP in his last two starts.

The key will be whether Sanchez can shake off his funk. In addition to allowing three homers and five runs to K.C. last time out, he’s allowed 4+ runs and more hits than innings in three of his last five outings.
