Padres vs Mets Prediction, Picks & Odds — Tuesday, September 16

Clay Holmes looks fatigued, Sean Manaea has been shaky, and piggybacking the two of them doesn't inspire much confidence. Padres right-hander Michael King provides enough of an edge to take San Diego on the moneyline.

The New York Mets will work to salvage their postseason hopes as they host the San Diego Padres for a series opener at Citi Field tonight.

New York has struggled to put together wins and has an uncertain pitching situation tonight, leading me to take San Diego straight up in my Padres vs. Mets predictions.

Read below to dig deeper into tonight’s matchup with my free MLB picks on Tuesday, September 16.

Padres vs Mets prediction

Padres vs Mets best bet: Padres moneyline (+105)

The New York Mets finally picked up a win on Sunday over the Texas Rangers, snapping an eight-game losing streak and maintaining their tenuous hold on the final NL wild card. But things don’t get any easier in Queens, as the Mets will now host the San Diego Padres for three games.

One big concern for New York is its starting pitcher situation. The Mets will send Clay Holmes to the mound, and there have been some signs of fatigue for the former reliever down the stretch. Holmes has only gone beyond five innings in one of his last nine starts, and has allowed six earned runs on 11 hits over 8 2/3 innings of work in his last two outings.

The Mets will back up Holmes with Sean Manaea, who has been struggling himself, posting a 7.71 ERA since the start of August. And New York’s offense isn’t inspiring confidence either, averaging 2.78 runs over their last nine games.

Padres starter Michael King looked good enough in his return from injury last week for me to feel confident in him against the Mets tonight. I’m taking the Padres to win outright at plus money.

Padres vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

Along with taking the Padres to win, I’m expecting continued struggles from the New York offense tonight. That not only has me targeting the Under, but also King to cover Over 4.5 strikeouts, something he did in six of his last seven starts before his shoulder injury in May.

Since joining Covers in 2022, Ed has offered his sports betting analysis primarily on MLB, NFL, college football, and college basketball games, but is willing to take on any sport.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
