The Chicago Cubs look to sweep their season series against the Colorado Rockies this afternoon at Coors Field.

My Cubs vs. Rockies predictions target Chicago southpaw Matthew Boyd to rack up the strikeouts.

Read on for my MLB picks for Sunday, August 31.

Cubs vs Rockies prediction

Cubs vs Rockies best bet: Matthew Boyd Over 5.5 strikeouts (+115)

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd is putting together the best season of his career at age 34. He’s 12-7 with a 2.82 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, plus he's racked up 137 strikeouts in 153 1/3 innings.

Boyd has been hit or miss this year when it comes to strikeouts. He’s had three or fewer in eight starts, while racking up at least eight in six others. Overall, he’s reached this six-strikeout mark in exactly half of his 26 starts, including eight punchouts across six innings against the Colorado Rockies back on May 28.

The Rockies are one of the worst teams in the league in terms of strikeouts — with 9.29 per game — including 8.75 at home.

Boyd is coming off an eight-strikeout performance on the road against the Giants and should be able to at least get to six against the lowly Rockies this afternoon.

Cubs vs Rockies same-game parlay (SGP)

The Cubs squeaked out a 4-3 victory on Saturday night, but that came after an 11-7 win on Friday. Boyd should keep the Rockies’ bats at bay while the Cubs tee off against Tanner Gordon and his 6.44 ERA.

Pete Crow-Armstrong had a tremendous first half of the season with 25 home runs and a .265 average through the All-Star break. However, he’s hitting just .216 since then and has just four multi-hit games in August (one in his last 11 contests).
