Well, the Toronto Blue Jays are officially in a pennant race. With just a two-game lead in the AL East, they can’t afford to give up any more ground to the Yankees and Red Sox.

But that’ll be easier said than done as the AL West-leading Houston Astros come to town for three games.

Luckily, everyone in Toronto is coming down with a fever. That’s right! Shane Bieber takes the mound on Tuesday night, and my Blue Jays predictions are backing him to bounce back.

Blue Jays predictions for September 9

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Time for redemption

Shane Bieber to record a win (+140 at BetVictor)

The Toronto Blue Jays need this series with the Houston Astros to get off to a good start. So, why not hand the ball to your newly minted ace in Shane Bieber?

Bieber was giving Blue Jays fans the fever before a bit of a rough outing last time out against the Cincinnati Reds. But I’m here to tell you not to worry about it.

The 30-year-old right-hander pitched just one bad inning in that game, where he gave up five runs on what was mostly soft contact. He still pitched six innings and struck out six. His expected ERA still sits at a very good 3.18, and his strikeout rate of 32.3% is among the big league leaders.

He’ll face a Houston team that has struggled at the plate this season. Even with Yordan Alvarez back in the lineup for the last few weeks, the Astros still rank 17th in batting average and wRC+, while the Blue Jays lead the majors in those categories since the All-Star break.

Those Jays bats will step in against a Houston pitcher also returning from injury in Luis Garcia. The 28-year-old right-hander is making just his second start since May 2023 following Tommy John surgery.

Garcia pitched six innings in his return, giving up three hits, but two of them left the ballpark. And that was against a light-hitting Angels lineup.

The Jays will stake Bieber to a lead against a starter still knocking off some rust, and he’ll pitch deep enough into the game to hand the ball to their high-leverage relievers and earn the win.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Shane Bieber to record a win

Shane Bieber Over 5.5 strikeouts

George Springer Over 1.5 total bases

The strikeouts have arguably been the most impressive thing about Bieber’s return to the mound following Tommy John surgery.

He’s throwing all of his pitches well and mixing them even better. He’s struck out six batters in all three of his starts, pitching at least 5 /3 innings in each. I expect more of the same against this Astros lineup.

Garcia won’t be happy to see his former teammate George Springer in this one. Springer continues to have a magical year, hitting .301 with a .942 OPS and 27 home runs.

He’s also 3-for-7 in his career vs. Garcia, with all three hits going for extra bases, including two home runs. So, Over 1.5 total bases for Springer here tonight.
