The Boston Red Sox are on their first real slide of the season, having lost three straight games and they will now try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Oakland Athletics as they close out a three-game set at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox will be in tough for the series finale as they will be close to a pick’em when they face off against the A’s and red-hot starter Sean Manaea.

Starting pitchers
Sean Manaea (3-1, 3.07 ERA): Manaea is in a grove right now. The lefty took a no-hitter into the eighth in his last time out against the Rays and ended up giving up one run on two hits while striking out 10. It was his fourth quality start of the season.
Garrett Richards (2-2, 4.54 ERA): It has been a tale of two runs for Richards with the Red Sox. (Sorry for the alliteration). The right-hander had a 6.48 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP over his first four starts of the season. But Richards has bounced back over his last three starts, lowering those numbers to 2.89 and 1.11, respectively.

It’s a little funny that the Red Sox are having a little bit more trouble against an actually good opponent. But that's exactly what has happened against the A’s.
On top of that, the Boston bats were going to cool down at some point after a red-hot start. The Red Sox, who rank fourth in the league in scoring, have plated just eight runs over their last four games and are hitting just .206 over the last week. Now they have to deal with Manaea.
Oakland's lefty is dealing right now, pitching to a 2.23 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over his last six starts, while limiting opponents to a .219 batting average.
Richards, meanwhile, has been hot and cold this season and is coming off a start in which he allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings against the Orioles. But hot-or-cold Richards is consistently getting hit and is allowing opponents to bat .264 off him this season.
When you consider the way that Manaea is pitching right now, Richards’ inconsistencies and the fact the Red Sox bats are cooling off, the value is with the A’s in this one.

Over/Under pick
The total is just way too high for this matchup. First of all, each of the first two games of this series went well Under the total, seeing an average of five runs scored per game.
Second, as noted, Manaea is in a groove, allowing two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. And while Richards has been inconsistent, the A’s don’t exactly swing for contact, ranking 25th in batting average and are 18th in scoring at 4.21 runs per game.
This contest also features two solid bullpens, so this game is a good bet to make this series 3-for-3 for the Under.
