Key Takeaways
  • Hard Rock Bet launched its online sportsbook and casino in Ontario, marking the brand's first expansion outside the United States.
  • It's likely that Ontario was chosen because it has a competitive iGaming market and is home to Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa.
  • Ontario players can use the Hard Rock Bet app or website and earn rewards that connect their online play with the company's physical casino experience.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida’s online sports betting and internet casino gambling platform launched in Canada’s most populous province Wednesday, approximately two months after it obtained its Ontario iGaming licence

Hard Rock Bet’s app can now be downloaded by Ontario-based Apple and Android users. There is also a desktop site.

The Ontario sports betting expansion is Hard Rock Bet’s first foray outside the United States. The online sportsbook and casino site is live in 10 U.S. states, including Florida, Illinois, and Michigan.

"Expanding into Ontario with Hard Rock Bet marks the first time we've brought our platform to an international audience," said Marlon Goldstein, executive managing director and CEO of Hard Rock Digital, in a press release. "We're excited to introduce Ontario players to a premium entertainment experience that reflects the energy and service synonymous with the Hard Rock brand.”

Ontario as the first international stop for Hard Rock Bet makes sense for a few reasons.

To start, the province is one of just two in Canada with a competitive iGaming market, which allows private-sector operators to obtain licenses to offer online sports betting and iCasino products (notably, Hard Rock Bet can currently offer iCasino in only two of its U.S. states, New Jersey and Michigan).

There are now nearly 50 provincially regulated operators offering more than 80 online sports betting, iCasino, and bingo sites in the Ontario market.

There is another ...

As of July 13, there is one other Canadian province with a competitive iGaming market.

The new Alberta sports betting and iCasino market launched last week with 22 operators, and there is no limit on how many others could still join. Hard Rock, however, has not yet confirmed any Alberta launch plans.

Still, starting in Ontario also makes sense because Hard Rock runs a brick-and-mortar casino in the province as well, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Ottawa.

Having a physical location associated with its online business is an advantage for Hard Rock, and one that almost all other iGaming operators in Ontario lack.

According to Hard Rock, Ontario bettors will have access to its reward programs and points, which they can redeem with the operator for use online and in person.

"With the launch of Hard Rock Bet, we can now stay connected with our guests and players wherever they are, on property or off,” said Christine Crump, president of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa, in the release. “It's a natural extension of everything Hard Rock stands for, one seamless experience across the digital and physical worlds."
