Hard Rock Bet is en route to Ontario.
The Seminole-owned online sports betting and internet casino gambling brand was issued an iGaming registration by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) on Thursday, according to the regulator's registry.
- Hard Rock Bet received an Ontario iGaming registration from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, bringing its online launch in the province closer to reality.
- Ontario will be Hard Rock Bet’s first Canadian market, and it follows the opening of the physical Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa last year.
- Hard Rock Bet's Ontario launch also raises questions about its plans for Alberta, which intends to open a competitive online gambling market July 13.
The registration tees up Hard Rock Bet to launch in the province, although it has yet to debut its Ontario sports betting and iGaming app. Hard Rock must also execute a contract with a separate agency, iGaming Ontario, as part of the regulatory process in Canada’s most populous province.
Still, obtaining an Ontario iGaming registration is a sign that Hard Rock Bet’s launch in the province is imminent. The iGaming brand is live in 10 states, but not yet in Canada, so Ontario will mark its first foray north of the U.S. border.

Hard Rock Bet launching in Ontario would also follow the opening of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa last year. The $350-million facility in Canada's capital will give Hard Rock a brick-and-mortar connection that it can nudge its Ontario-based digital users toward, and vice versa.
Hard Rock's owners, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, had previously showed interest in an online presence in Ontario. The tribe’s digital business was in line to acquire the Canadian assets of PointsBet last year as part of a broader bid for the Australian bookmaker. That ultimately didn’t happen, but Hard Rock Bet is now aiming to set up shop in Ontario anyway.
Significant Ontario iGaming news: Hard Rock Bet is now a registered (licensed) operator. Not live yet in the province, but an Ontario iGaming license makes sense for Hard Rock after opening its Ottawa casino last year.

Hard Rock Bet’s looming launch in the province also raises the question of whether the brand will seek to expand further in Canada.
At this point, that would mean obtaining a licence to offer Alberta sports betting and iGaming, as the Western Canadian province intends to launch a competitive online gambling market July 13.
Except for Ontario and Alberta, no other provinces have adopted a competitive iGaming model, wherein private-sector operators can obtain licences and legally take bets under provincial regulation.
Covers emailed Hard Rock Bet with questions, including about a potential Alberta launch, but did not receive a response before publication.
