DraftKings Sportsbook on Monday unveiled a new live-betting “Moonshot” feature that utilizes dynamic wagers with changing values.

Key Takeaways

  • Outcomes during plate appearances are assigned multiplier values.

  • Users accumulate values until they reach their designated target.

  • Bets will be paid in full if the multiplier value is reached before an out is recorded.

Sports bettors are used to “bet to win” formats. A $10 wager at +100 odds would net a $20 payout if successful, or $0 if incorrect.

Moonshot reframes the betting experience by allowing single bets to increase in value as they approach a target payout. Values are assigned to every possible outcome and help customers progress to their end goal.

“DraftKings continues to lead the way in live betting by delivering innovative ways for fans to engage with the game as it happens,” said Corey Gottlieb, chief product officer at DraftKings. “Moonshot adds to the excitement of betting on a live MLB game, bringing a fun multiplier mechanic to the action. We’re always looking for ways to make live sports more engaging for our customers.”

The feature prompts users to select a live MLB game, submit a wager before an upcoming plate appearance, and choose a target multiplier. The potential payout scales based on events that occur during the plate appearance, each of which carries an assigned multiplier value - for example, a double adds a 2x multiplier.

Customers build their bet toward their target payout and can cash out at any time. The bet settles as a win if the user hits their predetermined goal and loses if an out is recorded before the target is reached.

How to play Moonshot

Moonshot is a first-of-its-kind game in the sports betting industry. DraftKings labeled it a “new, dynamic way to engage with live MLB games.”

As an example of how “Moonshot” would play out in real time, imagine a user placed a $5 wager with a target multiplier of 4x. A full win would pay $20, a loss would pay $0, and users could cash out when available.

The bettor’s goal would be to accumulate enough multiplier points to reach the 4x amount and trigger the $20 payout before an out is recorded. Every pitch adds 0.25x to the multiplier, meaning that an eight-pitch at-bat that ends in a double would fulfill the 4x multiplier.

Eight pitches (0.25x each)
One double (2x)

DraftKings’ new product will debut in the following jurisdictions: Arizona, Connecticut, Colorado, Washington D.C., Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Ontario, Canada.

Moonshot will be offered alongside DraftKings' existing live and pregame betting products.

More options for customers

DraftKings has demonstrated a consistent commitment to innovation in the sports betting industry. Its progressive parlay feature launched in 2023, allowing users to walk away with wins, even if one or more legs lose.

More recently, it launched sports contract combos for its prediction market platform, DraftKings Predictions. The feature offers “greater flexibility and more dynamic access across sports” for prediction users, a company spokesperson told Covers.

The 2026 MLB season is still in its early stages. The Los Angeles Dodgers (+200) are the clear-cut favorites in World Series odds, while the New York Yankees (+550) are fighting to keep pace. The Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners (+800 each) lead a chase pack that also includes the Philadelphia Phillies (+1,400) and Milwaukee Brewers (+1,500).
