DID YOU KNOW?: All in the Family (January 12, 1971, to April 8, 1979) came at a time when the CBS television network wanted comedies of a grittier nature that would tackle current issues. Not a hit initially until Emmy ultimately came calling and viewers suddenly took notice. By season two Carroll O’Connor and company began a five-year reign as the top-rated series on television. Everybody, and I do mean everybody, was tuned in weekly to this groundbreaking sitcom. All in the family was eventually surpassed as #1 by another CBS sitcom, M*A*S*H, which aired from 1972 to 1983.
