Biden's US Treasury department
has sent over 90 million stimulus payments so far

Washington (CNN) About 90 million stimulus payments, totaling more than $242 billion,
have been sent as of Wednesday, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service said.

That likely covers more than half of the households eligible for this third round of payments,
which were included in the $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill signed into law by President Joe Biden
less than a week ago.
A majority of this first batch of payments was sent via direct deposit and all of those recipients
will have access to the funds Wednesday, the agencies said.

No action is required for most people to receive the money.

Almost half of those 90 mi9llion received their free money on the weekend through direct deposit.

Senate confirms first Latino
Secretary of Health and Human Services

WASHINGTON – The Senate narrowly confirmed Xavier Becerra to be Health
and Human Services secretary on a 50-49 vote Thursday. Becerra, California's
Attorney General, will be the first Latino to hold the Cabinet position.

As HHS secretary, he will play a crucial role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic
(ed. that was allowed to flourish under the failed trump administration)

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the sole Republican to cross party lines and
vote in favor of Becerra.

for 'serious human rights abuses' against Uyghurs

(CNN) The US announced sanctions Monday against Chinese officials for
"serious human rights abuses" against Uyghur Muslims, a step coordinated
with allies including the European Union, Canada and the United Kingdom,
which imposed sanctions on the same individuals and others, the Treasury
Department said.
The announcement was part of a broader show of unity by the US and
its international allies, all voicing condemnation for Beijing's repression of
Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang province.

President Biden looks to reassert a consumer watchdog agency
that was completely sidelined by Trump

Biden's administration has pinpointed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
as a tool to help deliver on promises to address systemic racial inequality.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB, hollowed out and politicized
under the Trump-regime after his administration failed to eliminate it outright,
is a regulatory agency created by former President Barack Obama in response to
the last economic crisis crated by REPUBLICANS.
Democratic lawmakers, consumer finance experts and former CFPB employees say
the groundwork is being laid for it to re-emerge as the aggressive enforcement entity
it was originally envisioned to be

Experts said a fully staffed, enforcement-focused CFPB gives Biden a crucial tool
to advocate for lower- and middle-class Americans who have in recent years, and
during the pandemic in particular, been preyed on by financial institutions and
subjected to dubious lending and debt collection practices.

"There is going to be a cop on the beat again," said Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.,
who helped create the agency. "The Trump team, they tried to make clear they were
there to help big banks and big money lenders, not families.
But the Biden administration is focused on using it to level the playing field."

The approach would be in line with the agency's original mission, and it would mark
a notable change from its direction under Trump and his accomplices.

Unemployment claims fell to a pandemic low

CNN -- A year ago, the US essentially closed for business, sending tens of millions
of workers to the unemployment lines. Many shops and other businesses quickly
reopened, adding their laid-off workers back onto payrolls. Weekly first-time jobless
claims fell from a peak of of 6.6 million in April 2020 to about 1 million a week in September.

But the numbers have remained stubbornly high since then.

Last week, 684,000 people filed for unemployment claims on a seasonally adjusted basis
— the first time that number fell below 700,000 during the pandemic.

Eviction moratorium extended until June 30

The federal ban on evictions has been extended yet again, bringing relief to
tens of millions of renters struggling to catch up.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended its federal moratorium
on eviction for non-payment of rent until June 30.

It marks the 3rd time the deadline for lifting the ban has been pushed back.

As one of his first acts in office, President Joe Biden called on the CDC
to extend the ban until March 31.
