American oil tycoon accused of trying to conspire with OPEC to inflate prices

New York CNN —

Scott Sheffield, founder and longtime CEO of a leading American oil producer, attempted to collude with OPEC and its allies to inflate prices, federal regulators alleged on Thursday.

The Federal Trade Commission said Sheffield, then CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources, exchanged hundreds of text messages discussing pricing, production and oil market dynamics with officials at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, the oil cartel led by Saudi Arabia.

Regulators say Sheffield used WhatsApp conversations, in-person meetings and public statements to try to “align oil production” in the Permian Basin in Texas with that of OPEC and OPEC+, the wider group that includes Russia.

“Mr. Sheffield’s communications were designed to pad Pioneer’s bottom line — as well as those of oil companies in OPEC and OPEC+ member states — at the expense of US households and businesses,” the FTC complaint said.

Unlike with OPEC nations, US oil production is supposed to be decided by the free market, not by collusion among the major players.

    After Fox News promoted a hoax
           about homeless veterans being “evicted”
from New York hotels to house migrants last year,
some of the network’s anchors said they would
provide viewers more information “as we get it.”

That promise was apparently disingenuous:
Fox has yet to report that the originator of the
bogus story now faces federal FRAUD charges.

Toney-Smith’s tale collapsed within days,
as local news outlets reported that she had
fabricated her story and the homeless veterans
had never existed.

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors charged
Sharon Toney-Finch, an Army veteran
with multiple counts of fraud.

    “This is pretty infuriating, homeless vets
    who served our great country, they’re being
    put out on the street and replaced by illegal
    immigrants,” Sean Hannity alleged in one such segment.

FoxNews, which relentlessly portrays migrants 
 as dangerous criminals conducting an “invasion”
of the United States, picked up Toney-Fitch’s hoax.

   Fox News and Fox Business gave the story,
  - which Fox claimed to have “confirmed” -
more than an hour of credulous coverage over six days.

Alice Stewart, a veteran political adviser and
CNN political commentator who worked on
several GOP presidential campaigns, has died. 

She was 58.

CNN hired Stewart as a political commentator
ahead of the 2016 election, and she appeared
on air frequently to provide insight on the political
news of the day, including as recently as Friday
on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) will introduce a bill on Friday that would name all U.S. coastal waters for Donald Trump.

The legislation seeks to rename the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone to the “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States.”

Steube told Fox News Digital he is introducing the bill because Trump “cares about the strength and resilience of our oceans.”

Ironically, as president, Trump rolled back more than 100 environmental regulations, with several of them pertaining to the ocean.
