I do not recall at that time that there was a push to exit back during Obama and likely because of this very issue..its a mess and it is not a winnable exit or a winnable position to stay in. So for sure nobody could see how we could exit and we are seeing why that is right in front of our faces.
Biden, Trump, Obama, Bush they all know it is just a bad situation and the high odds that if an exit came it would lead to bad results and in a way it also means we lost again...and who wants to do that?

Nor 10 years. Nor 5 years. In fact, the mantra at the time was to NOT get bogged down in VIETNAM part II.

Obama made a mistake there even though his VP at that time (Joe Biden) was opposed to a military surge and also wanted the US to pullout.
Of course none of that would have been necessary had the republicans under the Bush admin immersed into nation-building and a never ending war.

Biden did vote to support the Attack on Iraq. However, the USA should not occupy a country for 20 years and expect worldwide support for our arrogant, abusive and intrusive foreign policy.
If Afghanistani troops had occupied the United States, guerilla warfare would have ensued. Some Americans undoubtedly would have been so enraged that they'd be willing to shoot them in the back and/or bomb them while they sleep, and it wouldn't have taken 20 years for that response.
American governments - Republican, Democratic or other - should not behave as if it's 1946. It's high time we stop trying to control so many countries by military or financial means. They don't like it and neither would we.
