Been watching the WSOP on ESPN 2 and loving it....I have a goal to make it out to vegas next year. I think I could do well as I'm good at math. Was wondering what they mean when they refer to a blind? It seems like it is something done even before the 2 cards are dealt to the players. Thanks 4 any help and I'm sure I'll have more questions...

Here's another question hopefully someone can help me with. Ok lets say I'm 1st to either make a raise or fold and I'm dealt pocket aces. But I want players at the table to think I don't have much. Now, of course I don't want to fold but i don't want to raise, what do i do?

blinds - are 2 or more forced bets. They rotate around the table. There is a dealer button that rotates around the table, and to the immediate left of the dealer button is the small blind, which must post usually 1/2 of the big blind, to the left of the small blind is the big blind, they must post the full minimum starting bet, so if the blinds are $50-100, small blind is $50, big blind is $100, and the minimum bet is $100 to call, and you can raise from there. AS for Pocket aces, you are asking how to "slow play" them, which can be dangerous, but you can just call with them, or you can raise 2 times the bet, which is kind of slow playing them. The more callers there are, the more likely these aces get cracked.

he said dont go because if you need to ask what blinds are, you're gonna get destroyed in vegas.
if you are good at math, just play low stakes until you learn. unless you're a natural, even being good at math, you'll get your ass kicked for awhile i promise. being good at math just means your upside is higher once you learn.

stripper dude - if the small blind is $50 and the call is $150 then yeah you'd throw $100 in and you're good to go. If the big blind is $100 though, then you must raise at least $100, 2 times the bet. (In no limit the raise is 2 times or greater than the bet, in limit it is exactly 2 times , in spread limit, well that's different) These guys are busting your balls but until a few years ago I hadn't played live games, and now I am doing well at them, although I play almost every day. Find a card room or Indian joint, and play the lowest limit game. The blinds sound confusing but actually i is very simple and any dealer can walk you through it. You need a ton of experience though to read hands and such.

Ya sorry I don't mean to flame you, but if you need to ask these questions you need A LOT of practice before you hit a casino. I suggest playing online with play money first and then moving on to low limit games. Watch a lot of it on tv as well. I watched the WPT and World Series for hours on end before I ever hit an actual casino, mostly due to me not being legal at the time lol.
But ya watch and play lots of hands. Practice makes perfect.

Everyone says "practice"...and that is good. But not good if you don't know the basics of the game. If you are interested in tournament poker, read Harrington on Hold 'Em....both volumes. There are many other books that offer a lot, but this will give you all the basics AND explain simple tournament strategy (AND, he gives you practical problems to work through at the end of each chapter).
THEN, practice. Nothing is a substitute for time at the table.
