I am in small blind, guy raises to 100, guy re-raises to 300, I call the 300 with 8,8. I have 1000 total so I figure I'm gonna gamble. If I don't flop a set I'm done. Well flop is 8-4-4, I have the boat. I check, 2 guys all-in w/ Q's and Aces, My boat holds up and I chop the tourney 4 ways. sometimes you have to gamble early on. Then I fuck up guy is all in w/ A-J, I could call w/ KQ for 1/3 of my chips but I muck it, it would have won. KQ is a hand I hate to call a big bet w/ as it usually s not ahead of too many hands.

dont think it was that big of a gamble "early on"..u have 1000 chips, blinds must be very low to start tourney with only 1000 chips, so if you miss the flop you fold and have plenty of ammo left with the blinds being so low. needlees to say, it was the perfect flop for you. as far as laying down the k-q for a 1/3 of your stack, that was an easy decision.

the blonds start at $40, it is like a turbo tourney, blinds go up very fast. Pocket 8's may be the best hand you see, don't like to call an all in though with a medium pair as it's probably a race at best.

You were not getting nearly the odds to call that raise and re-raise pre-flop with 8's. You had to know you were up against at LEAST one over-pair (possibly two) and over-cards. You were about a 7:1 dog IF YOU SAW THE HAND TO THE END. Even more of a dog if you were just seeing the flop. And you weren't even getting 2:1 when you made that call. That's as bad as it gets.
You had implied odds, but not enough to make that sort of a play. You got lucky, but it really was a horrible play.

hutchemall, I'm sure you are more of a pro than Brunson or Ivy or those guys are, but I'm getting over 3:1 on my money and I would smooth call with a medium pocket pair against jokers with probably 2 overs, it is about knowing the players too so if you don't even know how the players play then don't tell someone it was a terrible move. You are probably a losing player so you should know your players, that would do you better than any stats or BS you can come up with. By the way 88 vs 99 or higher is a 4 to 1 dog. I guess using your logic then you can't call a raise with any hand other than AA because you "may" be beaten. You must just get destroyed in tourneys or live games.

There is a lot more information that you take into account other than just "odds".

There is a lot more information that you take into account other than just "odds".
if you want to play scared that's one thing, but have seen this situation a lot, a guy makes a smallish raise with A J or similar range of hand, next guy re-raises big, maybe not all-in though w/ A K , as some people think this hand is the nuts or the end-all of hands, if you know these types of players then you own them, as now two of the aces are out, makes it less likely that high cards will come out. If you have 9 9 or similar your hand has a good chance to hold up.

You don't list the blinds, but if the first raiser raised to 100, I would assume the SB and BB are $25 and $50, respectively. Thus, when it is to you, you have to call $275 to win the $475 currently in the pot. What do you do if the original raiser goes all in? Do you call pre-flop with 88? If you honestly think someone raises and another player re-raises with just two overs and not a made hand, you might be the one getting destroyed my friend. You can't play poker hoping to flop sets all the time with medium PP's. It was a great hand that flopped perfectly for you, but that's all it was.
