I talked about Detroit last couple of weeks since I researched the fact that in this entire decade of futility where they only won 38 games ( out of 130 ) , this team had managed to stay out of longer than 4 ATS losing streaks
Since 2000 , Detroit has not had more than 4 consecutive ATS losses ever . and looking back at Detroit's 3 game ATS losing streaks , this is how they responded >>
So, this is Detroit's ATS record after 3 consecutive ATS losses in each individual season since 2000 >>>
2008-2009 : Chicago @ Detroit Lost ATS ( went on to cover next game )
2007-2008 : Detroit @ Minnesota Lost ATS ( went on to cover next game )
Ended the season with 3 ATS losses .
2006-2007 : Detroit @ Minnesota lost ATS ( went on to cover next game )
@ New England Won ATS
2005-2006 @ Green Bay Won ATS
2004-2005 @ Minnesota Won ATS
2003-2004 : no losing streaks ATS of 3 or more
2002-2003 : @ Chicago Won ATS
2001-2002 : no losing streaks ATS of 3 or more
2000-2002 : @ NY Giants Won ATS
So, Detroit has had 8 ATS streaks of 3 losses, not counting the 3 game losing streak ATS that ended the season . The Lions went on to cover 5 of those 8 on their 4th game , and in the 3 ocassions that they lost a 4th game ATS , all 3 times they went on to cover their fifth game .
Now what I want to know , is how they responded their following game after breaking their ATS losing streaks .
We are looking for a pattern ...and there is one >>>
2000-2001 ..Detroit followed their win with yet another ATS win
2001-2002 ...N/A
2002-2003...After their win ATS @ Chicago,the Lions followed that with a loss @ New England 12-20 ( + 6 )
2003-2004 ... N/A
2004-2005... After their win ATS @ minnesota , the Lions followed that with a loss @ Indianapolis 9-41 ( + 9.5 )
2005-2006 ...After their win ATS @ Green Bay , the Lions followed that with a loss 17-41 @ Cincinnati ( + 10 )
2006-2007 ...After their win ATS vs Buffalo , the Detroit Lions followed that with a loss @ NY Jets 24-31 ( +4 )
Same year ...After their win ATS @ New England , the Lions followed that with a loss vs Minnesota 20-30 ( -1 )
2007-2008...After their win ATS vs Dallas , the Lions followed that with a loss @ San Diego 14-51 ( + 10 )
2008-2009 ...After their win ATS @ Minnesota , the Detroit Lions are playing @ Houston getting 8.5 to 10 points
So , Only once have the Detroit Lions been able to put 2 consecutive ATS victories on the heel of an ATS losing streak of 3 or more ...and that was in the year 2000
Detroit is 1-6 ATS following an ATS win ( that broke a 3 or more ATS loss ) since 2000 & 0-6 ATS since 2001 .
The combined score for these 6 losses is 96 - 214 averaging 16 points in favor vs 35.7 points for the opposition
Interestingly , 5 of those ATS losses were against an AFC team .
They will be facing Houston this week .
