Early Observations & Discussion re Super Bowl Line

Get your facts straight pal, I said it one week and that was last week.

just out of curiosity - which of these receivers would you draft ahead of fitzgerald today? or even last week?

i'm just interested in the fact that the steelers will be facing 2 top 7 receivers this year (for receptions), a list none on which none of the names you've listed above are on. then when we look at touchdowns, moss suddenly appears third (tied with boldin) and fitz is first.

not so much leaning on him to win the game, but i'll be surprised if he doesn't score at least once. add the +7 and now it's 14-0. and what if they scheme more toward boldin as they use ike taylor on fitz? what then? hell, sean breaston could then rack up the stats.

and as far as the nfc west, you're saying their offensive numbers are skewed because of the competition? seems not unlike a defense that (as i said before) plays the browns, bengals and ravens twice during the year. surely that helps one's defensive stats.

also, for the record, i think fitz is pretty ok at catching balls downfield and not exclusively doing so at "5-7 yds off the line in the middle of the field."

I don't know. The Giants of last year were a MUCH BETTER team than this years Cardinals.  And last years line was what?  11?

I also agree Fitzgerald's impact being severely underesti,ated in this game.......this guy is a game changer

 

Another excellent excellent point....the Cardinals coaching staff is intimately familiar with the Steelers personnel and weaknesses and will exploit them in match-ups

In order for it to be a good debate you need to contribute. You've ignored almost all of my points on the Steelers and the matchup and have instead responded by either agreeing with the line being too high, saying yet again something about Fitzgerald or saying there is nothing great about this Steeler team (which is ridiculous).

Analyze some of the matchups or offer some counter arguments to some of my arguments or others that have posted reasons why they like the Steelers. And try to refrain from unfounded statements about "Pittsburgh kool-aid drinking" when I'm sure many including myself have backed this great team many times this season and there is no kool-aid drinking involved. The only kool-aid drinking going on is by the people that have gone googoo eyed for this Cards offense and have jumped on the Cardinal bangwagon.

Check the date I posted that, jackass. BEFORE all the matchups were set. I even bet on the Cardinals in round 1. It's tough to be dead meat in your first game on the road when the other QB hands you 6 turnovers and you get 23 of your 33 points off of those turnovers. The Cardinals still have not one impressive road win this season.

Btw - It's still a waste of money.

I have not posted much but the people who have to cuss and ridicule other peoples opinions on this thread are immature.  When you have a great offense against a great defense most of the time you will get normal scoring gm in the mid 20"s.  I predicted the line should open at 7 not 6 1/2 based on tradition with the Steelers and the lack of love for the Cards due to there being a bad team for 40 years, i should know i have had to put up with the Cards in St. Louis for all those years.  As for as this superbowl gm. goes i think it will be close. Do not be disillusioned by Philly"s comeback in the championship game in the 2nd half.  All the money was on the Cards because they looked so good in the 1st. half, just what the oddsmakers planned on, Ariz. to cover for the whole gm. and a Philly comeback in the 2nd.half to take the halftime money. Big games are always controlled by key players such as the QB and the Zebras. Did you really think Jake Delhomme played that bad or do you believe all the money was on Carolina.  Ariz and the under is the hardest possible combo for the public to make in this game and when you look at a number of threads it is the least possible combo the public can make.   Vegas does not lose the big one and when you come to the conclusion they are always winning and building new casinos, then when it smells like it and feels like it well you know the rest of that phrase.  Whats black is white and whats white is black and untill you understand that you will be sheep to the slaughter.  Early money is on Ariz. some sharpies some non public on Ariz, but the big money always comes down on the weekend of the superbowl and the oddsmakers will get what they want, a ton of big money on the Steelers.  Last year the early money was on the Giants for 10 days, but when the high rollers came in for superbowl weekend they pounded New Engl. because they were playing for perfection. For the few of you who are unsure who to bet on then wait for the halftime line and bet the oppisite of what ever red flag the public is excited about, example if the score is high scoring in the 1st. half then you can bet your bottom $ that it will be low scoring in the second half. Just like Ariz. dominating in the 1st.half and then what did you see in the 2nd. half. AMEN

4 games against divisional rivals that are among the worst teams in football.

Pitts does not have the best defense in NFL history sonny, you better take a better look at the Chicago Bears of the 80"s with Richard Dent and co.  A matter of a fact the Steelers of the 70"s had a better defense then this years squad.  I wonder how this Steelers defense would fare with the likes of the Cowboys and the Steelers offense of the 70"s or SF. and Joe Mont. of the 80"s.  So step back for a moment and think about what you have just said Andamac99

A big difference between these two teams is the way in which they lost games this season.  Pittsburgh's losses were all close games against good teams (Indy, Phil, NYG, Ten) - the final score of the Ten game was misleading as this game was close until late in the 3Q.  Also, Pgh was arguably better on the road this season than at home.  This is the make of a championship season - competing every week regardless of who you play and where.  Arizona's losses, on the other hand, were pretty bad and their road record was less than stellar.   

Another point:  Pgh will not shut down Larry Fitz, no team can completely shut him down.  But they will shut down the run and Arizona's offense will be much less effective if they are forced to play one dimensional football.  Arz has been fortunate to be able to run the ball so far in the post season - I wonder how effective their offense will be after they abandon the run??

I also think the 2 weeks off will hurt Arz more than the Steelers b/c Pgh has bascially been great all season long whereas Arz has been streaky.  Everyone is talking about Arz being the hot team going into the SB, but which team has looked better in the playoffs?  Arz has had a nice run in the playoffs, but really they could have lost 2 of the 3 games.  They played a young, inexperienced Atlanta team that had been bad against the pass all season long, yet Atlanta was winning in Arz in the 3Q.  The Carolina game was a joke with all the turnovers, but they showed up and won convincingly.  They blew a big lead in the Philly game and needed a 4th Q comeback to win.  Pgh blew out a hot SD team and dominated a solid Balt team - the Balt game was close in the 4th Q, but Pgh could have easily been up 23-0 in that game.  The fact is they dominated a tough division rival in bad weather conditions who they were playing them for the 3rd time this season and still beat them soundly. 

Pgh has had the more impressive regular season and post season , they played a much tougher schedule, and they have more playoff experience. I already made a large wager on Pgh ML -250 and am considering adding -7 before gametime. 

Where did I say they were the best defense in NFL history? I said they were one of the best defenses in NFL history. And they are. The stats back it up and how can you bring up offenses from the 70's when they were so much less complex and as sophisticated as offenses are today? Teams ran about 15 plays back then. Look at what defenses have to contend with today.

And look at how Pittsburgh has lost those games. With great defensive fronts and secondaries forcing Ben to hold onto the ball and commit turnovers.

ARIZONA DOES NOT HAVE THIS TYPE OF DEFENSE!!!! THEY ARE AS SOFT AS BUTTER. ROETHLISBERGER WILL HAVE A FIELD DAY.

Agreed about not completely shutting down Fitz but look at what Pittsburgh has done to other similar #1 receivers as I've posted above, they have really limited them to almost nothing. Also you can limit Fitzgerald by getting pressure upfront with a great defensive line. The Steelers have a great defensive line. Dallas, Minnesota and the Giants also have some of the best lines in the NFL and in games against those teams this season Fitzgerald caught 5 passes for 79 yards, 5 passes for 71 yards and 5 passes for 52 yards with 1 total TD. Even in the first game against Philly he caught 5 passes for 65 yards, and was contained in the 2nd half last week once Philly settled down.

How come you guys can't see what a mismatch this defensive front of Pittsburgh is against this Cards o-line, or how this Cards defensive front and secondary is nowhere near good enough to contain this Pittsburgh offense? Games are won here in the trenches and this is a mismatch.


I could argue this crap for two weeks until gametime but I'm done. The results on the field will speak for themselves. I've already laid the points, pounded the ML and will be adding more to the ML. Pittsburgh will run the ball and execute the short passes that will chew up this secondary yet again and keep the Zona offense off the field. And when they get on the field a great Pittsburgh defense will contain them.

I wish GL to all you Arizona backers because you are definetely going to need it.

One last thing - Can anyone show me something impressive the Cards have done away from the dome this season? Anyone?

This is exactly what everyone said about the Philly/AZ game.

Pitt's D is identical to Philly's D.  They have 3 more sacks on the year then Philly, Pitt allows 3.2 ypc while Philly allowed 3.4.

Andy, please show me where this Pitt D is so much better than the Philly D...

Yeah, the Cardinals game vs Carolina doesn't mean anything.  The more posts of yours I read, the more I realize that these are wasted moments in my life.  You can try to convince yourself for the next two weeks that laying 7 points against the best team in the playoffs so far is a good idea.  Maybe you will convince yourself eventually.  Personally, I think people laying 7 against the Cards are just stone cold idiots that deserve what they have coming.       

 

This shows the true depths of your NFL knowledge.  None of these guys are even in the same class as Fitz, and if you can't see that, I completely understand why you are about to piss away money on a horrible bet.
