Even as one of the biggest Laker fans on the planet earth I can not say Kobe is better than MJ. Kobe is my favorite player and has been since he put on a Laker uniform. I was never a Shaq guy, I was always a Kobe guy........point being, not even I can say he is better than MJ.

I will say this though, at one point, depending on what he's done by the time he decides to ride off into the sunset, it COULD BE arguable. I would NOT, however, say that he's nowhere close to Jordan because he is definitely in the same conversation with MJ. MJ is 'the man' and I can't see him losing that tag anytime soon. Kobe COULD reach that pinnacle, but, it probably won't ever happen because Kobe has no many haters. If it simply comes down to popularity MJ will win hands down, Jordan didn't have haters (other than some fans of teams he torched in the process of winning his 6 rings) like Kobe does. EVERYBODY (myself included) loved MJ and most still do to this day.

I do think this though, when it is all said and done I think it will look like this...

Focus on his game.... period. Perhaps Bryant being "better" than Jordan is perhaps a slight over statement but his ability to play at the same level cannot be dismissed.

his middle name is Bean.. Nobody with that middle name could possibly be better than MJ, Nobody.

On a side note, as much as I hate to say it, the Lakers are gonna be very lucky to get past the Spurs.

It was Michael Jordan as a whole that made him great. It wasn't only the way he played the game but the way he conducted himself off the court also. He was an all round champion at heart wich made him a great player & innovator.  Say what you will about any other player right now but you can't match that.

I still have the original MJ video "Come Fly With Me" on VHS...had it since I was kid and I still probably watch it about 3-4 times a year. The way the narrator tells the story of MJ's rise to fame from a kid who couldn't make his high school team to the greatest ever...brings tears to my eyes still to this day.
 
The heart of a champion along with the will, desire, and competitive nature that makes the good ones GREAT. That was Michael Jordan to me. An unbelievable will and desire to be a champion and be the best.

Anybody else invest in the "Michael Jordan 20th Anniversary Collectors Edition" DVD set?
 
Wow! If you haven't already, you really need to hit up Best Buy or whereever and pick it up. It includes the aforementioned "Come Fly With Me", "Michael Jordan's Playground", "Air Time", "Above & Beyond", "His Airness", and special features including his greatest dunks, moves, clutch shots, assists, memories, and more.
 
My favorite part though, is MJ's FIVE Greatest Games...complete and full from start to finish: the 63 point playoff game in "The Garden", the memorable 69 point career high game vs. the Cavs, 55 point Finals game in '90 vs. the Suns, '97 Finals game vs. the Jazz, and '98 Finals vs. the Jazz which was his last game in a Bulls uniform.
 
I highly recommend this set and place my stamp of approval. I believe this is a must have for any REAL sports fan...

I don't recall Jordan ever whining or complaining about his team and teammates the Kobe did prior to this season.  I mean seriously... is getting $100 million not enough?  Is 3 championships not enough?

QUESTION... Why does Kobe want more championships?

CAUSE HE KNOWS HE'S NOT BETTER THAN MJ.

Kobe is great... he's just not the GREATEST.

michael jordan is one of the worst people off the court "3ballbomber"...he is a known rascist, terrible tipper, and known to be an arrogant prick in person, his only claim to fame is he is the greatest basketball player ever...but saying he was great off the court sounds like one of those terrible NBA films videos

Wow. I'm surprised this thread aroused so much hate...especially for Kobe.  True, I love and respect's Kobe's game; hands down, but not because it's the "in" thing to do.  For some of you that were actually around and not watching MJ only on ESPN Classic,  remember MJ's basketball era was weaker than it is now where he could play ISO basket all day. Kobe doesn't have that luxury.  He can't even post without getting doubled. 
 
The NBA is waaayyy more competitive now.  Kobe has to deal with zone, he goes up against taller, bigger and stronger defenders than Jordan did. In the 80's, most of the shooting guards that Jordan played against were easily 6''2 to 6''4; and of course Kobe can shoot over shorter players like that with ease, yet he also plays against guys that are 6''5 to 6''9, even taller.  Definitely, MJ may be and I emphasize "may be" a little more efficient and consistent than Kobe, but overall, Kobe's a better shooter, has better range, better ball-handler (hands down), better scorer and has killer instinct. And who would know better than Phil Jackson when a couple of years ago when asked who was the best basketball player, he said, "Kobe is better than Michael with the basketball."  Well, Kobe's improved greatly since 2006, so I could only imagine what PJ's opinion would be now.
 
I just think that back in the 80s, basketball sorta went into a recession, and then there was Jordan who revived the game of basketball and put it back on the map with endorsements, etc. It was like he could do no wrong.  Media made him out to be a GOD with genious marketing.  And so when people think of MJ now, they get all caught up in the nostalgia of him and what he did for the game. Also, MJ was a people person which made him a hell of a lot more appealing to people; Kobe has not been a people person and unfortunately, he's judged on that too.  Not undermining MJ's awesome game and skill set (for his era), but in terms of skill and ability, you gotta go with Kobe considering the tougher type of basketball presently.
